jess | My husband and I have no children(yet) and are renting a house, what can help us to not pay a lot for taxes? |
My husband and I don't have children(I am however currently 11 weeks pregnant). We are renting a house, that is under my fathers name, but due to the economy we have not been able to change my dads name to our names as owners of the house. We make pretty good money. However, we are also in the process of building a home. Well still a very long process. Barely last year we finished paying our architect $4800, and then $500(deposit only) to the city. Would that help us out in getting some money back? Since its going towards making our home?
Also, what other things can help us out? Unfortunately, we do not have donations, we don't pay for gas to go to work. How about receipts from doctor visits? Since last year I had a miscarriage, I kept going to the doctor a few times, plus once at the hospital(but I do have health insurance) so i didn't pay as much, but will that help? Thanks.
Oh and another thing last year we did have to pay $300 and got like $50 back! Also, in the very beginning of last year, I changed my dependents to 0, and had $100 taken off my check(automatically) to transfer to my savings, will that help me out, that maybe I didn't make as much? |

Do you put the max into 401K's or IRA's?
Donations would only matter if you had enough itemized deductions to itemize. Gas to go to work wouldn't help anyway, it's not deductible. Medical expenses only help if you itemize, and even then you can only deduct the portion of your unreimbursed medical expenses that's over 7.5% of your income, so if you have a fairly good income and med insurance, you aren't likely to be able to deduct anything there. The money paid to the architect and to the city for a permit isn't deductible either - eventually you'll be able to deduct mortgage interest and real estate taxes though.
Changing your dependents to zero won't affect your tax liability, although it will either increase your refund or decrease what you have to pay in when you file. Putting money away in a savings account won't affect your tax unless it's something like a traditional IRA.
The baby will be a nice tax break for you. |

Start a small business. This helps with taxes based on what the income is you bring in and yu must be a sole proprietor. Be sure to write off as much as possible. Auto write offs help a great deal. Also find an organization to donate to.
I have an organization and a couple of business and it helps believe it or not. Many people look to my organization towards the end of the year for donations.
I'm not a professional tax person by any means and nothing is guaranteed. Good luck. |

Most people cannot come up with enough items to itemize on their taxes unless they have mortgage interest and real estate taxes. You should max out your 401k and IRA contributions. |

You might want to visit with a tax consultant, even one like H&R Block in a strip mall. That's the best source of tips on how to save on your tax bill.
Claiming "zero" dependents should help tremendously.
You should consider contributing the max to your IRAs. If you and your husband don't have IRAs, set them up right away. |

Play with some numbers on the tax calculator here http://www.hrblock.com/taxes/tax_calculators/index.html
as long as you are being truthful, this will give you the best guesstimate what you will owe/or get for a refund. |

If you are a first time home buyer, you could qualify for a $7500 credit from the gov, however, you must move into your new home before July 1, 2009.
I assume that you are filing MFJ, then if you want to itemized you must have the following expenses which must exceed $10,900;
Medical Expenses (amount over .075 X your AGI)
Mortgage Interest
State Income Taxes Paid
Property Tax
Personal Property tax
Charitable Contribution
Casualty and Theft Loss
Employee Expenses and MISC Exp (amount above .02 X your AGI)
Medical expenses above includes the following;
Most hospital and doctors' charges
Travel Mileage to seek health service
Health care Insurance Premiums
Medication
Eye care
AGI = Adjusted Gross Income or your wages plus or minus adjustments
MFJ = Married Filing Jointly |

This is more of a comment but I think it is stupid renters have to pay more. If they can't afford to buy a house why should they be expected to pay more taxes? |
