go to a tax advisor so he can deduct his expenses as well it will lower the taxes and he will be surprised what a self employed person can deduct.

Apart from the social irresponsibility of not putting into the communal chest and the likelihood of penury in retirement has he considered what would happen should he have a bad accident (God forbid) that meant he could not work?

Your husband has a right to his opinion. We cannot change other people, we can only change ourselves. Perhaps you could manage your share of the money in a way that seems best to you and let him do his thing the way he wants.

my friend didnt pay tax for years and got fined a lot less than the tax bill

ladysorrow
he obviously do not declare tax
and most prob receive in cash from his clients
if that is not the case and the payments can be traced through cheques or direct into his bank acc, I would be worried myself

Sooner or later, the tax people will catch up with you. I know of someone who ended up having to settle up a tax bill after his parents (who were self-employed and never paid tax either) died. With everything becoming far more computerised and centralised, the chances of being caught and lumped with a massive tax bill are increased. You would be better off going to a good accountant/tax advisor asap.

You need to talk to a financial advisor.
There are 2 implications:

1)Legal
Not paying tax is a crime and he could get in serious trouble

2)Financial.
As you have said no pension, plus when the government find out, they will hand him a whopping bill, and they wont care how much he has really earnt, they will just to an over estimate.

Nobody likes paying tax, but it needs to be done.

Talk to a specialist.

still havent seen anybody actually post the link to where the tax code says you have to pay taxes. funny how all of you have never actually read the code... here you go! maybe if you read the code... or the constitution you would actually know your rights. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode26/usc_sup_01_26.html
