My man is planning to try landscaping as a self employed person, is it complicated with tax and all that?
This is a serious question and I would really genuinely like help.

I don't know if it's complicated, but if you contact HMRC they will offer you advice for free, after all they at some time 'want money from you'.

Mind you if the forms are anything like the self assessment forms then it will be a nightmare!

not at all. Buy a tax program and do it yourself. The first years of a new business are tough, but you can write off all the equipment you bought against profits. So if you can show losses "on paper", you will have -0- tax liability. Also, cash payments can be kept under the table.
However, if you bank profits and show consistent gains, a bank will be more likely to loan money for expansion. Like when its time to buy a new truck and plow( to earn in winter!)
A good decision, but it is not always easy. Medical benefits might be an issue. Go to the local chamber of commerce to get group rates for medical benefis too.
Lots of things to do when you're just starting out.
Good luck.

He will have to fill out his own tax form, what most people do is have an hour or so with an accountant and they'll take you through what receipts and such he needs to keep. And then when the tax forms come another hour or so with the accountant. They can usually save a self employed person more than they cost to hire, find a local one that does self employed people. Its all relatively straightforward.

I once did a self-employment course for 12 weeks, it was free and the information I was given was brilliant. In Ireland there's a small-business intiative called Invest NI, but I'm sure there's something similar for your part of the world. If you contact your civil advice bureau they would have the local initiative's number in their little black book. They welcome people genuinely thinking about self-employment and are very helpful at explaining tax-assessments, book-keeping, overheads, profit margins etc. In some cases they will even provide a small grant to get you started. Best of luck, and kudos for wanting to be his own boss.

If he gets an accountant and keeps records of all his outgoings and income, it's really quite easy.
The biggest problem is keeping a regular flow of work, and keeping all the jobs close rather than spending too much time travelling to one job after another.
He'll probably be given a salary schedule of around £6k a year with a set amount of tax payable in arrears, and can take other money out of the business via dividends, and the business also gets taxed.
An accountant juggles figures to avoid too much tax, and is well worth the money.

Daily Mail Tax Guide, or Lloyds Bank Tax Guide from Smiths/Waterstones etc will take some pain out of the Tax side. It will help with things like tax deductible purchases etc.
