zamira | My mom and sister are moving in with us. Should we claim them on our taxes? |
We'll be paying her $1,000 monthly, and my sister will be a college student. We are doing this because child care is too expensive in our area. It is cheaper to have them move in and provide them with housing. Should we claim both of them as dependents (college sister is 16)? Also Does my mom have to do taxes if she's earning so little though? Who would be best to answer these types of questions? Financial advisor? Accountant? I have no clue... |

First re your mom - yes, she'll have to file taxes since she'll have $12,000 income for the year from you, and that's taxable income to her. And she'll make too much to be your dependent - if she makes over $3550 for 2008 you can't claim her.
You might or might not be able to claim your sister - not enough info in your question.
An accountant or the IRS could give you the answers after asking a variety of questions about your sister.
And by the way, henson's bf claimed her illegally if she made $10K, so he will likely be getting a contact from the IRS. |

You would want to ask a tax accountant. If your sister is moving in with you, either you or your mother can claim her, but you should. Your mother should file if she has any income because she might get a refund. You can claim for your mother if she earns less than 3400 dollars, lives with you half the year and you provide over half her support (housing, food, clothes etc) |

Talk to an accountant, I do know she will have to pay taxes on $12,000 a year. My bf claims me as a dependant even when I did my own taxes and made about $10,000. I just couldnt claim myself I claimed 0, and just got back most of what I paid in. |

not if youre paying her to watch your kids,no.yes she has to file taxes, shell be earning well above the minimum.if your sister works when she is in college you can only claim her patrially.you need to speak to a tax accountant about this, but seriously, dont try and screw the irs, they are auditing more people than ever, for the slightest of errors. |

See an accountant. Laws are very tricky regarding support of relatives. You can go to the IRS site and read up on it, but I would definitely see a tax accountant before you claim them on your taxes. |

If your are paying your mom a salary, you will not be able to claim her on your taxes. She is earning a living and you do not support her 100%. You may, however, be able to claim the sister if you are paying for her education as well as room and board.
Contact a financial advisor or the IRS. Either should be able to tell you what you can claim and what you cannot. |

I would suggest asking an accountant. I don't think you can claim them though unless you finacally support them. |

If you are providing them with food and shelter than you can claim them as long as no one else is claiming them.
Yes she will have to file as 12,000 is a lot of money to the IRS. |

You have to be their primary support. You can probably claim head of household if neither of them earns a lot of money or gets support from someone else. |
