josaca132 | My mother lives w/me. I provide full support. Can I claim her as a dependent on my taxes? |
She gets monthly SS check (small) and has interest from a savings account as her only income. I fully support her, heat, food, cable, phone etc etc. |

If you provided more than half of her support and her gross income is less than $3400, then you can claim her as a dependent. |

As long as her income (not counting social security) is under $3400, you probably can as long as you provided over half of her total support for the year. Her income, including the ss, most likely counts as money she provided for her own support. |

You pay utilities and food. Who owns or rents the home? If you live in your mother's home, you have to include the fair rental value of the home as support she provides herself. Her SS, interest, and any funds she has withdrawn from her savings are support she provides herself.
If you can establish that you pay for over half her support, you can claim your mother as your dependent. |

As long as her gross income was less than $3,400 (excluding non-taxable Social Security) and you paid more than half of her support. Keep in mind that her SS income is treated as support she provides for herself. This may affect your ability to claim her if you can't prove that you provide more than half of her support.
There's a worksheet in IRS Pub 501 that you can use to determine who pays more than half of her support. If you do, then you may claim her. Additionally if you can claim her you may also qualify for Head of Household filing status. She is not a Qualifying Child for EIC purposes though so claiming her will not entitle you to the EIC as stated by another uninformed poster.
Note: A parent does NOT have to live with you for you to be able to claim them as a dependent, contrary to what another poster has said. Most other dependents do, but a parent does not. |

You generally can if you provide more than 50% of their support. If in doubt, the IRS has a formula to figure. You have to provide her social security number and, of course theirs on your Return. I say the IRS has a formula because, if either or both of your parents worked and made 3400.00 or over, they could claim the exemption.
You may be eligible for the earned income credit also if you worked.

Supporting a dependant means you provide over 50% of their living expenses. Keeping Up a Home:
To qualify for head of household status, you must pay more than half of the cost of keeping up a home for the year. You can determine whether you paid more than half of the cost of keeping up a home by using the following worksheet. In your case, you may be married.
IRS: Cost of Keeping Up a Home
Amount You Paid
Total Cost
Property taxes $ $
Mortgage interest expense
Rent
Utility charges
Upkeep and repairs
Property insurance
Food consumed
on the premises
Other household expenses
Totals $ $
Minus total amount you paid ( )
Amount others paid $
If the total amount you paid is more than the amount others paid, you meet the requirement of paying more than half the cost of keeping up the home.
Include in the cost of upkeep expenses such as rent, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, insurance on the home, repairs, utilities, and food eaten in the home.
If you used payments you received under Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or other public assistance programs to pay part of the cost of
keeping up your home, you cannot count them as money you paid. However, you must include them in the total cost of keeping up your home to figure if you
paid over half the cost.
Costs you do not include. Do not include in the cost of upkeep expenses such as clothing, education, medical treatment, vacations, life insurance, or transportation. Also, do not include the rental value of a home you own or the value of your services or those of a member of your household. |

Yes, you can claim a dependent so long as:
- she has less than 3000 income annually
- is in the U.S. legally
- gets more than 50% support from you |

My mother receives SSN, but she also receives benefits from the military as a surviving spouse of a vet (don't recall the exact name of the benefits). I realize social security isn't, but are those military benefits also included in income? She has lived with me all year and I support her. Last time I claimed her it only added another $200 or so to my refund. Wondering why it's so low. |
