Rachel | My mum is on benefits, and because i work and live with her, they are now charging me all the rent. how come? |
i am 19 years old and work part time, i earn around £150 per week. my mum is on incapacity benefits as she is disabled, and now that i work, they have been charging me £50 per week of the rent, which i cant afford on my hours.
my mum recieved a letter says that due to a change of circumstances, since the 1st of may they have charged me just over £50 per week, and it has now amounted to around £300 without me knowing about it.
we are going to speak to an advisor tommorow, but i was wondering what i can expect to hear. i dont think i should be paying 85% of all the rent for the family on my wage.
can i get some advice, thank you. |

Hi I work for Benefits
The benefits office are making whats called a non-dependant deduction from your mothers benefits based on you working.
The amount of deduction made depends on how much you earn per week,
When the benefits office do not have any proof of a non dependants income the will charge the maximum amount which is what I think they have done to you.
on an income of £150 per week the non dependant deductions should be £17 per week from housing benefit and £2.30 per week from council tax benefit, you will need to give them proof of your earnings for them to reduce the deduction to the correct amount.
The non dependant dedduction is set by the goverment, according to benefit legislation, a non dependant is expected to contribute towards rent and council tax, which doesn't really make sence as they are not the liable person but then again benefit legislation is quite odd to say the least!! |

Rachel it sounds like you are living in a council or housing association property. I am not on benefits but was renting privately and getting Housing benefit and single persons discount on the council tax, but I received a letter from them as soon as my son hit 19 telling me that my benefit had stopped as at 19 you are considered an adult in your own right and therefore able to pay your own way and get a job.
I don't agree with this as most of the kids your age are only just as is your case getting a foot on the job / housing ladder with great difficulty.
I do think that somewhere along the way they may have done the sums wrong . I do hope that you receive some better news when you see the advisor. Make sure you have all your financial information with you and don't feel intimidated by them, you have every right to your or your mum's entitlements. You may have to fill in the forms again to apply for benefit. I am not sure what the figure is now but its approx £140 per week the government reckons we need to live on. Yes its laughable once you take all the bills into consideration this figure should be a lot higher.
You should have received at least a months notice of this change ! |

I care for a disabled lady who is on benefits & has her son still living at home. He has just finished uni & landed himself a good job. She also recieved a letter similar to yours although it wasn't for rent it was only for council tax. Her benefits have remained the same & they haven't charged her any more other than C.tax. I will ask her tomorrow if she knows why that is & hopefully be able to get back to you with an answer then. |

i have a similar prob i was put in a rented house by the council in jan as my mum was ill and had to go in a home and we had to sell her house to pay the fees leaving us homeless. they fast tracked it cos i was homeless and didnt ask me anything. my daughter is 19 and doing her nvq3 and earning about 120 a week. they have now said that they should have been charging me since january for her, and have deducted 25 a week off the housing benefit also they are making me pay 36 month council tax for the month for the rest of the tax year to make up what we owe them. we are already struggling with paying food, electrcity, gas water and now they are taking more off us, if i get a job they will only let me keep 20 pounds a week and i cant move as nowhere wants people on hb. the council acknowledge that we are homeles thru no fault of our own but they give u so little to live on and no incentive to work. hope u get it sorted out. email me and let me know. if i find out any info then i will do likewise. good luck. |

Oh rachel, I don't know the first thing about benefits and young people doing the normal thing and earning a bit of spending money - I think it's disgusting that you should be expected to pay that amount of your earnings for rent. I know that when I had a part-time job I gave my parents some "keep" but that was out of decency and respect for them, not because some housing association somewhere told me to - maybe I just managed to slip through the net - hope it all works out for you and you have the freedom to enjoy your money for a while! |

That's the way the thieves operate. Build up an arrears behind your back then start to stress you. Should be illegal. |

I know it's unfair, but a friend of mine did the same for years and had to pay the rent on her parents council house as neither of them worked. If you were in full time education you wouldn't have to pay it. If you moved out and got your own place they'd go back to getting housing benefit. If you earn you have to pay your way. Why should everyone else pay it for you? I do understand but I think that's just the way it is. You should be able to claim tax credits for being on a low income and it's possible to claim money as a carer if you care for your mum. Maybe you need to look at climbing the career ladder. |

So we can answer this one can you let us know who is charging you additional rent. Either the landlord has just increased the rent or Housing benefit has been reduced.
Could you also state whether mum gets Disability Living Allowance Care Component or not as thats important too |

thats rediculous!! my mom doesnt work at the moment cuz shes doing a course shes always wanted to do at uni and i have a part time job, its got nothing to do with it. the house is in her name and the council agreed to lease it to her knowing all about her payment methods etc. i think you should kick up a big fuss about it!! good luck x |
