My national insurance number has changed is this possible ( UK)?
I have been self employed for 2 years and I'm now starting a salaried job again and my new employer has asked for proof of my National insurance no, so I have given the number from my last self assessment form which ends in a letter 'D' - however my P45 NI number is exactly the same number but ends in a 'B'. does this change according to employment status or is there an error somewhere? Which one should I give to my new employer??????

There is a mistake - your NI number should never change.

tringyokel
The letter at the end of your number has no connection with your employment status. It is a throwback to the era when national insurance was paid by physically affixing stamps to a card. In order to spread the workload cards were designed to end at four different times - July, October, January and April (the 5th of each month). The letters A, B, C and D were allocated to these periods.

If your number has changed then it must be a mistake.

Where does this P45 come in? When you ended your self employment you would not have had a P45 so would have had to complete a P46 with your new employer.

If you have since changed employers then a mistake has been made by that employer.

No, I have been employed, self employed, employed again and then once more self employed in succession over the years - my NI number has never changed - I even know it by heart. (Mine ends in a C).

There's been a mistake. N.I. numbers don't change. Ring up the tax office & explain the situation to them. They will tell you which is the correct N.I. number to give to your employer.

This is important because it will affect what your final pension will be.

Don't worry about the last letter of a National Insurance number. As previously stated, it only refers to the quarter of the year in which it was issied. A lot of HMRC sites don't even use that bit any more, and even if the wrong one is imput, your tax record will still come up.

There is definitely a mistake somewhere along the line, i have been both self employed and employed and my national insurance number has never changed.
Contact HM Revenue & Customs on 0845 302 1479, they will be able to tell you your correct national insurance number.
