annepatriciawebb | My son owes the tax man and is too worried to contact them - what to do? |
He has paid his usual 18% on CIS each year but the balance owed has been left outstanding for a couple of years now - he is extremely worried about what to say to them and what they could possibly do. Does anyone have any helpful hints on how to approach them?? |

he needs to resolve this or they will garnish his wages or take his stuff. just go to them and talk about it. they can be very flexible on the payment of back owed taxes. i had back owed taxes and they kept my tex return for 3 years and that resolved the situation. no more problems with it. tho it does depend onthe amount in question.

Here in the states, the tax man does not go away. I reccommend your son contact your tax entity and work out a payment plan on the unpaid taxes. The penalties and interest here in the states will rock you. |

I would suggest you to contact your local H & R Block... These people know a lot and have plenty experience in this... |

He needs to contact them right away, the IRS isn't like it used to be they have made vast improvements and will workout a payment plan with him. (It's alot better than having wages garnished suddenly!) |

HMRC in the UK has set penalties they can impose - and set mitigation percentages available for certain circumstances. I believe the potential penalty mitigation for cooperation is in the region of 40% in practice.
His liability to tax will not go away - but he can minimize penalties by taking a proactive approach and contacting HMRC himself to start getting things sorted out. Make sure he keeps a record of all correspondence (best to do things in writing, keeping copies of letters sent - but if he prefers to speak to them by phone he must make sure he records the date and name of who he talks to so that he can show he initiated contact!).
If there is a substantial liability HMRC is usually also open to instalment arrangements over a period of time, particularly where he has taken the initiative in contacting them - so he may be able to spread payments as long as he agrees to make sure and keep up to date going forward.
It will probably be a huge relief to him to get it all agreed anyway. Good luck! |

Hi Anne I am sending you my reply to your question here since I tried replying to it but it said receipents address has not been confirmed yet.
Hi Anne. I don't mind you asking about my vasculitis. I had it when I was 10 years old (I am 25 now) and it affected my brain temporarly. I lost partial vision- I could only see colours and shapes. It was sort of like looking through a keleidoscope. I could not recognize faces. It only lasted a day or so. My kidney function is at 15%. However I am not on dialysis yet. My aunt is being tested right now as a potential donor for me for a transplant. I was told that I am a good candidate for a transplant. I am on a low sodium, potassium and phosphorus diet. I have high blood pressure. Symptoms I've had are mild chest pain and the occasional diarreah. I also get itchy bumps on my skin if I have too much phosphorus. Feel free to ask as many questions as you'd like. Hope you get better. Have a good day! :) . |

Talk to your local H&R block, or a trusted tax preparer. They can file back taxes and tell him how much he owes. This way he can talk to someone who is working for him. Good luck! |
