My tax code is is 522L Y, would this mean that i am on emergency tax?
Also if i am what is the best way to claim it back, does it happen automatically on april 5th?

Sam is wrong, BR is not emergency code. 522L on a week/month 1 basis is. I don't know what the Y means in yours, unless it is a badly written X, which would indicate an emergency code. Any refund may well happen automatically, but will take months, probably in the autumn. It takes forever for the employer's return details to get on your record, and then staff have to work their way through thousands of cases to manually review.
Have you worked for employer all year? If not, tax office will need to know about all your employment history since 06/04/07. You will soon get form P60. Send that to tax office with any other documentary evidence (eg forms P45) of tax deduction, and ask staff to review. This will get your case looked at promptly.
If you can add all earnings for the year together, you can imput in www.listentotaxman, and check.

The 522L code is the standard code, the Y might relate to you maybe being taxed on a Week/Month 1 basis, where you'll only be taxed for whatever you've earned for that week/month, and not taking previous pay and tax into consideration. It should sort itself out, with the Inland Revenue revising your code to suit.

I've never come across the code you mention.

Could the letter at the end be an X and not a Y ?

If so, 522L X is an emergency code and you are being taxed on a week1 or month1 basis.

However, from 6 April 2008, the "emergency" status will be removed and, assuming no additional entitlements other than your annual Personal Allowance, your new code will be 543L, which takes into account the recent Budget increase to Personal Allowances.

As for claiming back any overpaid tax, seeing as how we are approaching the end of the tax year, I would suggest that you wait until you have your last payslip for the tax year, or your P60, and then call your tax office for assistance. Keep copies of any correspondence or documents that you may need to send them.

That sounds like a fairly normal tax code to me...

No you have to fill a form out to get tax back, If your not self employed your employer should have all the right forms n stuff.

I would look into your tax code though - Good luck!

?
You can earn £5,220 before you are taxed.

no thats my tax code and im not !

sam
No emergency code starts with BR or with Letters.
522L means that you qualify for 5225 annual exemption which means you will be not taxed till you earn 5225 for a year but tax office or payroll divide this figure by 52 if you get paid weekly or if monthly then by 12. so if anything you get above your exemption you will be taxed 10 till 2230 and 22 after that.

if anycase you think you have been taxed more you can apply for tax claim which is easy really but let me tell you HMRC make 1.2m because some of the people get taxed wrongly and they never claim it.
oops just wonderning did you started your job recently because if you tick b on P46 your tax with be calculated on non-cumulative basis which means they think this is 1st month of the year and you have to ask at the end of the year for refund with form P58.
