is a reflection of 2006 taxes and what ever we get we will have to pay back in 2008???? For some reason they are not telling the Public about this!!!

Not exactly true. It's based on 2007 taxes, not 2006.

Other than that, it's sort of true but not totally. For 2008 there will be a tax cut - the rebate is an advanced payment of that. If you get the rebate now, you won't get extra money next year from the tax cut.

The rebate is an advance on your 2008 taxes.

According to the proposed plan, in 2008, taxes would be cut from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.

It's like a one time tax cut for 2008, but you get the rebate now instead of waiting to file your 2008 taxes.

One thing taxpayers won't have to worry about is giving back any excess if their 2008 taxes show that the advance this year was actually more than they should have received.

"If it turns out that credit on your 2008 return is greater, you get to take that additional amount," says Luscombe. "If it's lesser than what you got in 2007, you don't have to refund that back to government." The law says the IRS can't recover the extra payment by reducing your 2008 refund or adding to your 2008 tax bill.

No. You won't have to pay it back, and some people will actually get more of this "handout" when they do their 2008 return. See irs.gov.

You have to report it as "income" for your 08 taxes, but the amount of the rebate (a few hundred dollars) won't create any significant difference on how much your taxable income is anyway.

This is true, it comes directly off your 2008 tax return.

lawgirl
If it's set up like it was the last time we got a so called "tax rebate" it is deducted DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR from next year's refund!!! It was NOT counted as extra income but rather an "advance" on next years refund.
