My tax teacher said I don't need to file?
Okay, Last year I had a part time job as a data entry clerk and was paid as a independent contractor (1099-Misc) I only made a little over 2grand, I asked my taxes professor If I had to file a 1040, Scheduel C, or C-EZ, she told me that I did not have to file since I made so little.

I know I wont have to pay anything (I made less then the standard deduction.) even if I did file so can I just say screw the whole thing.

You have to report amounts above $400 if you are self employed. Your teacher is wrong and you need to file.

She is wrong.

The minimum filing requirement for this type of income is only $400.00 per year.

You won't owe any "income tax" but you will owe about $283 in "self-employment tax".

Remember the old saying:
"Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

Celeste
You have to file if you made over $400 as an independent contractor or from self-employment.
So, you need to fill out the 1040, Schedule C/C-EZ, and Schedule SE (self-employment tax).
The next time you see your professor, make her read the filing requirements in the 1040 tax booklet or show her this page: http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq-kw54.html

Your teacher is WRONG. The filing requirements for self employment income is different than wages. No social security and medicare has been paid on that income yet unlike traditional employment where it is taken care of through payroll deduction. You are required to file self employment income when it exceeds $400 - not the standard deduction like regular wages. You have to file a 1040 and Schedule C EZ (you won't need the long C). On C you'll enter your expenses and the net profit is used to calculate self-employment tax (the social security and medicare payments). You will not owe any income tax. If you have no expenses to offset the $2000 your SE tax will be $283 (or more if you made over $2000). Better get to work on it and cut a check to mail in by the 15th so you don't accrue penalties and interest.

Where do you go to school? You will have to file a 1040 with a schedule C because you have self employment income over $400. While you won't owe any Federal Income tax, you will owe self employment tax on your earnings less any applicable deductions. Also don't forget to check on your state filing requirements. State filing requirements/limits are not always the same as federal.

If you want your 2008 rebate check - file.

Your tax professor is right, you are below the requirement of $8750 and you are also below the non-filer status too.

scokeman
No need to report it you have to make a minimum of $3000 before you have to report it. Lucky You
