file jointly NEXT year....CONGRATULATIONS!

Judy1
Next year - it's your status as of 12/31/07 that counts for the 2007 tax year which is what's being filed now

Emmy
You have to wait until next year, because the taxes you are filing this year are for 2007, and you weren't married then.

Dep.
You're filing taxes now for the 2007 tax year. You weren't married during that year, so you wouldn't file as married until next year when you file your 2008 taxes

Your marital status on Dec 31st determines how you can file. If you married in 2008, it would be presumed that you were Single on Dec 31st and therefore must file your 2007 tax returns as Single. (Of course if either of you were married to someone else on Dec 31st, things would be different.)

Wait a year.

dan b
Definately wait until next year. Your status matters only on the last day of the year, December 31.

God forbid you get divorced in 2008 and don't remarry by 12/31, you can not file jointly for any of the year.

Liz
You will file jointly for tax year 2008 but not for 2007
