First off, sorry for your loss. If you are referring to the 2006 tax year and your wife passed away in 2006, then for the year that she passed away, you will still be filing joint as a surviving spouse. You get this for the first year only.

BahamaBride2006
Yes! You can also claim as surviving spouse next year (if you don't remarry this year).

The taxes you file this year are based on last year, 2006. If she was alive during any part of 2006, then yes, you can claim her.

If she died before 2006, then I don't think you can. If she died IN 2006, then yes, I think so. I'm not sure though.

You will file a joint return, and it will be marked as "final return" for your wife.

yes you can file married filing jointly and next year you will file qualified widower. I believe you can claim her also for 2006...sorry to hear of your loss

Livin' La Vida Gay
Only if she passed in 2006, remeber to include the funeral expenses.

Lucky you, although you should have to pay for getting rid of that dingy brawd. Good Luck though, sure wish my wife would die.

My opinion is that yes you may but only up until the date of her death, but that is only reason and logic, so I advise you to check with the IRS in your area.
