Philip H | My wife does not currently work. Am I able to claim her as a dependent on my income tax return? |

Judy1
No, a spouse is never considered a dependent. And in spite of what someone else said, a married person can't file as head of household.
But your best way is to file as married filing joint. Rates are better anyway than head of household that way, and you get the exemption for your wife as well as yourself, |

You claim her as an EXEMPTION, if your filing status is married, filing jointly. Check chapter 3 of IRS Pub17 for all kinds of detail here http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p17.pdf |

Judy is right! A spouse is never considered a "dependent." You should file with her (MFJ) and claim her exemption though.
Your rax liability will be much less (especially if she didn't work) and therefore you will get more back in a refund! |
