Need to find out a VAT number of a company?
I am in litigation with a company and want to find out if they are VAT registered. Now , earlier questions/answers I have found seem to suggest that I should call them up and they should give it. But, me and my lawyers have not been able to get any informattion from the company or its lawyers. They just refuse to give it. The company has been issuing invoices with the VAT added but without any VAT number on it. The company is based in the UK .
Ok to issue invoices with VAT but no VAT number is illegal. First port of call is the Customs and Excise - believe me they have more power than the courts and the lawyers. I have seen grown men cry when being audited by the VAT Man!
Explain your situation. I am assuming that you have paid "VAT" to this company and want it returned. Not sure why else you would want a VAT number for. Let the C & E do some of the work. If their lawyers are not giving out VAT numbers when requested - they are breaking the law as well.
Answers your possible questions and explains how to find a VAT number.

Ask HM Revenue & Customs.
Sounds to me like they're charging VAT to their customers but aren't VAT registered and are therefore keeping the money themselves.

Biz Guru is not quite right. An invoice needs only to show the details if it is supplied to another VAT registered person. If you have reason to believe that they are not actually registered get in touch with HMR&C in the area where the supplier is and see if you can get them interested...

Go to http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/. You need to make a search using the company name and the website should be able to provide you with info such as VAT registration, founding date, etc.

If this company is charging VAT without being registred, HMRC would want to know about them anyway. Get your lawyers to contact them.

it may be that the company is too small to meet the 50k threshold for vat registration.

Go to HM Revenue & customs...
silly gorbie
the vat number must be shown on all business letterheads and invoices.

Thes should have details of all registered VAT numbers in the UK. I think you can do a search using the VAt number given, OR the company name.
