Net Income - Gross Income ... what's the difference?

Net Income is the amount you "catch" (net/catch...get it?) and can spend to buy stuff. It's just gross/sickening the amount of taxes IRS takes away from your Gross pay.

Net is how much you take home after taxes AND deductions. That would include Federal Tax, State Tax, FICA (social security), Medicare, for taxes and examples of voluntary deductions would be health care, dental, 401k.....etc

Gross income has several definitions. There is Federal Gross which is your total pay minus your health deduction, 401k deduction and other section 125 deductions.

There is your FICA gross which is basically the same as your Total Gross

My point is that each tax has it's own gross (the basis for calculating the tax). Some deductions reduce some grosses and some taxes are run against a gross where reductions are not allowed (like FICA and Medicare)

Net is the amount before Tax is added and Gross in the amount after tax

Yep, that pretty much covers it. Net income is what you've got on the ol' pay stub after the tax man gets his claws into it,

Bridey
Net Income is your income after taxes.

Gross income is before taxes.

Think of holding a big fishing net and you swoop it along and what money you catch is what you get! About 60% - 70% of gross!
Gross (it's called gross) because it's what you think you got before income taxes, unemployment insurance, pension plan contributions, etc.

Net is after taxes, gross is before

For a company gross income is Pre-tax net sales minus cost of sales. also called gross profit. Net income is what remains after subtracting all the costs (namely, business, depreciation, interest, and taxes) from a company's revenues. Net income is sometimes called the bottom line. also called earnings or net profit.

For an individual gross income is income minus taxes, allowances, and deductions. An individual's net income is used to determine how much income tax is owed.

Gross income is the total amount you made before taxes and deductions such as insurance, 401K, etc.

Net income is the amount after deductions and taxes. What is on your paycheck.
