Net Income is the amount you "catch" (net/catch...get it?) and can spend to buy stuff. It's just gross/sickening the amount of taxes IRS takes away from your Gross pay. |

Net is how much you take home after taxes AND deductions. That would include Federal Tax, State Tax, FICA (social security), Medicare, for taxes and examples of voluntary deductions would be health care, dental, 401k.....etc
Gross income has several definitions. There is Federal Gross which is your total pay minus your health deduction, 401k deduction and other section 125 deductions.
There is your FICA gross which is basically the same as your Total Gross
My point is that each tax has it's own gross (the basis for calculating the tax). Some deductions reduce some grosses and some taxes are run against a gross where reductions are not allowed (like FICA and Medicare) |

Gross (it's called gross) because it's what you think you got before income taxes, unemployment insurance, pension plan contributions, etc.
