drgnflyks | No federal withholding from check? |
when i filled out my w-4 form when i first started working i answered all those questions like single so i entered one and it all added up to 6 total so therefore no federal was taken out of my pay. i am worried about having to pay the irs. i have a daughter that i claim and i claim myself. but how did it come up to 6 dependents. very worried about this any help would be greatly appreciated. i will give more detailed info if needed to answer my question better. |

Mmmkay?

The w-4s are not clear and simple to fill out. You should have just told your boss you wanted to claim 0-2, depending on what you wanted withheld (the more you claim, the less that is held out) . Your employer (as responsible person - not legally) should also have noticed that there was no withholding and questioned the w-4. Because that didn't happen, depending on your income, you will most likely owe. In order to avoid this next year, have your employer change your withholding immediately for the 2008 tax year. |

You probably counted one for yourself, one for having only one job, one for head of household, one for your daughter, and two for the child tax credit for your daughter - that would be 6.
Unless you are eligible for EIC you won't get much if any refund, but shouldn't end up owing, or if you do it would be a very small amount. |

You probably filled it out this way:
A 1 for you.
B 1 for one job.
D 1 for your daughter
E 1 for HOH
G 2 for child tax credit
If you do your taxes and owe, adjust the allowances down. |

Don't start worrying until you have prepared your tax return. Depending on your income level, credits, and adjustments, you may not owe any federal taxes, which means there was no need for taxes to be withheld. |

Regardless of the w-4, you will have to pay the IRS based on actual dependents. If your tax obligation exceeds your withholding by some threshold, you will also have to pay a penalty. |

The total number of the W-4 is total "allowances", not just dependents. It also includes
1) 1 for yourself if no one else can claim you as a dependent
2) 1 if you are single and have only one job or are married to someone who does not work
3) Various numbers related to credits (credits for which a working parent may be eligible include child tax credit, credit for dependent care, earned income credit, etc.)
If you have three allowances your credits, one for your dependent, one for yourself, and one for this being the only job in the household, that adds up to 6. |

Six doesn't necessarily mean six dependents. It can include credit for being head of household, not being claimed by anybody else, and many other things.
As a single mom of two I end up with 9 on my forms, yet they still take something out. I generally get it all back, though. I would just buy some tax software that you can use yourself, like H&R Blocks or TurboTax, and see what it has to say. So long as you filled out the forms honestly you shouldn't have too many problems with a huge tax bill. |

i think you goofed, but did you claim head of household? even so you can claim less even if it is 6 try mabie 3. |

Okay, so you can change your w-4 as many times as you want. If you keep it that high you might not get a retun or you could owe $. So change it to 2. No more no less. Good luck. |

It almost sounds like the place you are working for has you as Contract Labor if that is the case you are responsable for paying the taxes. |

You are exempt from paying federal taxes for about the first $15,000.00 or so you make in one year. So if you are gonna make more than that, straighten it out with your employer now, if not, I wouldn't worry about it now, and do it when you do your tax return. You wont have to pay anything then |

If you claimed 6 dependents that just means that you will get MORE back at the end of the year. Claiming more means that the govt. is taking more out of each check which means a greater return. |
