No time to do tax return. Can i send a cheque as a 'guesstimate;' and avoid a fine?

confucious says
send in aself assement form with just your name and address on and the cheque for the guess estimate that way you have sent your form in so you cannot get charged the £100 penalty whatever the outcome.
because you have sent the form in it doesnt state the form as to be filled in just returned by the 31/01/2008

You can try, but I doubt you will avoid the penalty for failing to submit your return. It's submitting the return that's required, not throwing money at it. HMR&C will point out that you've had since last April . . .

frankie
the fine is the least of your problems they charge you interest daily on any amount not paid by 310108 the fine is usually a statutory £100

In the UK, if your Tax Return is not received by 31/01/08, you will automatically get a penalty of £100. Non-negotiable. When your return is finally received and processed, if there is no tax due, the penalty is waived, or if the amount due is less than £100, the penalty is the same as the tax due.
The problem with your idea of a guesstimate, is that you won't know whether you have over or underpaid. If you have underpaid, you also get charged interest at a commercial (high) rate.
You could employ an agent or accountant to do your Return for you, but you have left it late for this. One local accountant here charges clients an extra £100 if they give him papers late to get a Return in on time. So many people have left it late, that he has to pay his staff overtime. Why have you left it so late? You could do an estimated Return , but if more tax is due, interest will be charged.

Sending them money will prevent them charging you interest on the tax due,( assuming your estimate is correct) but you'll still get a £100 fine for failing to submit your return on time.

Firstly you can submit a return with estimated figures to the best of your knowledge and correct this within 12 months. If you give us someone information about your situation we will be able to assist you. Remember any payment you make will need to cover the balance due for this return period and a payment on account roughly equal to half of the tax due for this year to cover next year.

NICK A
Yes you can, think of a figure and post it off, better to make it a high guess and get a refund than to get fined.
Why have you not had time in the last 9 months to do return?

GloBee
Sure, why not! and they can guessitmate a fine or not.

Your best bet would be to call them up now, if not that fine will be very large with daily fines etc

referee
You can send a guessimate ( cheque ) they will soon let you know if you owe more..... but slow at sending you monies back if you send too much..... Good luck.

Well in the USA if you don't send in the paperwork you are still penalized--but the time isn't until April! Get on TaxAct.com or TaxCut.com or Turbotax.com and do your returns online. I took less than 30 minutes to do mine and my refund is already processing.

Astaroth
That would constitute TAX EVASION take the fine on the chin unless you want to get into a whole heap of trouble
