Not a student moving into student house what will happen if i get caught not paying council tax?
will i get done or will it be the landlords fault, she telling me just to move in and not worry about it!

Lestat
This depends on who is liable.

Firstly how many people are in the house? This will determine who is liable

If you are the only non student you will get a 25 percent discount on the council tax.

If you are liable and don't pay the council will chase you and if they catch up with you will charge you the arrears, they may also prosecute you in court or get a ballif to seize your belongings

Buddha
It is fraud and you will have to pay back the whole amount plus a fine.

Jewel
You will be fined if you are choosing to avoid payment when it is your responsibility.

If the landlord is renting a room to you inclusive of council tax then it would be landlords responsibility to pay per head.

Ask the local council. Clarify with the landlord.

If you are over 18 and not on benefits, then you may have a council tax liability. It all depends if you are on the tenancy agreement as that automatically makes you liable to be charged. If you are not on the tenancy agreement, then the students who rent and claim must declare you as a non-dependent in the household and that will again raise a liability if you have income. It is nothing to do with the landlord but she has a statutory obligation to tell the local authority who is in her house, just as you do as well. If they found out you are there, you will not 'get done' but merely billed and the council can back bill as well. If you are worried about it, then you should come clean. It's up to you really!

It is your responsibility to find out who pays the council tax for the place you live in. If the landlord doesn't pay then you must contact the council and explain your situation. It will catch up with you otherwise. Good luck,
Cathy

u will get done...
fine and possable prison sentence

uknative
This is from the site below and I'm sure is the ruling throughout the country: 'The responsibility of informing the Council Tax Office lies with the new tenants and this must be done as soon as they move into a property so that correct billing can be made.' So .... the onus is on you to inform the CTO - failure to do so could land you in trouble and the landlord has ill-advised you.

Meilien
You will be caught and fined for tax evasion. It's cheaper and easier just to pay up as having a rap like this could impact your chances of renting later on. Landlords don't like people who bring official scrutiny down on them.

Why should you get away with not paying council tax?
It is not fair, everybody else pays it and people like you make me sick.
You can go to JAIL for none payment.

Loki
If you get caught you could go to jail, for refusing to pay, or get a heavy fine. It's one thing they're really hot on. Are you claiming Housing Benefit? If you are they're already aware of your status.

k00lgoddard
as a student, if every member of your household are also students then you can get 'student exemption forms' which allow you to not have to pay council tax.
