OK im in an accounting class and there is one thing we cant figure out...why do debits always = credits???
if done the right way

Kurt K
That is how "double entry" bookkeeping or accounting works.

If the Credits and Debits don't balance (total to the same value) there is a problem or error in the accounting.

Dawn B
Because you have to balance!

v b
If you are referring to a double-entry bookkeeping system...then yes, the first entry (the debit) is always equal to the second entry (the credit).

The point of the system is to track the money. If the sides didn't equal, then you've lost track of some money and defeated the point.

just me
Think of it as charging one account with the expense and crediting another accound with the payment

For instance: If you purchase office suppies you will debit the office supply account so you can keep up with how much you spent on office suplies. You would credit the office supply expense account to show that you paid for office expense.

If the office supply account shows more money then the office supply expense account you owe money to someone for office supplie you didn't pay for yet.

Because Pacioli said so.

because u need double entry to balance the balance sheet, and the balance sheet needs to be balanced so u can check for any errors or omissions etc

Because no matter what entry you put into the journal, there is always a debit on one account and a credit on another. It's a matter to credit and debit the correct ledger. Having the cr and debit equal, you have a good assurance that everything is correct.

mylilbubbers
It's called the matching concept. It all starts with revenue. In order to gain revenue you have to spend something to make it. It's about matching revenue with the expense it took to gain it (which must be done in the same period). If you havn't made an actual payment, you've incurred a liability.

Because Programs = voter base and programs cost money. The money that comes from you buys votes for them... and if they can get more money out of you that means more votes. Always an agenda.... :
