Dawn C | OOPS...I owed $ for my taxes and the check bounced. Now what??? |
I just realized that I sent in an old check for my taxes...it's an account that I only keep a few dollars in. Therefore, the check bounced. I only owed $100, but still! So now what happens? Will I still get my federal refund? Additional Details Just to clarify...my husband and I filed together. I owed the $100 and HE is getting the refund. |

Call your bank, call the IRS, and get them a good check or get it taken care of right away. If you can, move the money into that account in case they resubmit it.
Technically, it can be a big deal to bounce a check and I don't know how bad the IRS is about it...but as long as you make it good and pay any extra fees (there will be NSF fees you owe the IRS - usually ~$25, plus a bank fee - usually ~$30) to clear it.
Not a big deal if you take care of it, but I believe bouncing a check for > $100 can be a felony so don't just ignore it. |

You are going to have to pay the bank first and the IRS will come after you for the rest of the money. |

Obviously you have to take care of the bounce - be pro-active and contact the IRS. They will probably require you to pay by money order or bank check for the bounced amount.
You may also be forced to pay this way from now on. I know for businesses who bounce tax checks, they get flagged by Uncle Sam and have to pay by certified bank check for all taxes going forward.
There is also likely a dollar penalty for the bounce, and they will charge you interest from the time of the bounce. |

if the bounced check was for state, then you'll diffidently get your fed. back. But the state will come after you for their monies pulse the bank will charge you their half to. Sorry for your stupid mistake, hope you get that cleared up. Oh contact ur bank and let them know the mistake you made also. |

you paid taxes but expect a refund?
so the bounced check is state?
that check will no doubt be sent again for collection,, and if you are due a refund from fed it will come along it it's own good time.
Isn't it a class A felony to write a hot check for as much as $100.??? |

I think you should contact the IRS and the state. I would definetly contact a lawyer and ask some advice just in case you get some letters from both parties. One thing you want to do is take care of the check and then you want to clear you name as being a bad check writer.
That follows you a long way so take care of it and I'm sure things will be fine... I don't know about the arrest thing, there are tons of people that have done a lot worse than you and are sitting at home chilling....Just take care of it soon and you should be okay... |

If you owed taxes, then you wouldn't have a refund coming.
If you mean you bounced the check to the state, then no, that wouldn't affect your federal refund.
Call whoever you bounced the check to and let them know what happened, then mail a valid replacement check by the deadline for paying. |
