On My Income Taxes can I deduct my groceries?

*Cara*
No, your groceries cannot be deducted from your taxes. Is this a serious question?

ninasgramma
As indicated in some of the previous answers, there are circumstances in which groceries could be deducted.

Food provided for a daycare center.

Restaurant expenses.

Food eaten at home while on a temporary assignment. For example, you are sent by your employer for a month away from your home. Unreimbursed living expenses including housing and food figure into your business expenses. This includes food you purchased for consumption at your temporary lodging.

But your everyday grocery bill while you are living at home is never dedutible.

You can deduct part of your groceries however the only way you can do that is by owning a business . Buy everything you normally use at home for your business using your business account and then buy small stuff for your home like fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, women monthly supplies. That way you will look like you only eat breakfast at home. have a good one

Not usually, no. If special foods or diets are prescribed by your doctor, then those foods can be part of a medical deduction. For example, if you were overweight and your doctor prescribed (wrote a prescription) for a certain brand of medically approved weight loss supplements, or a purchased program of food from a weight loss supplier, then it is possible for that prescription to be deductible.

But in general, no, your groceries are not deductible from your income taxes. Normal living expenses are not deductible.

``The Floridian``
Generally NO...unless you are in a business and provide meals as part of it, on a business deductions form. Or, if someone in your household has been prescribed a special diet for health reasons by a doctor, similar to meds.

why would you do that? the only way you could deduct groceries is if you have a self employed job as child care provider, or taking care of someone in your home.

Tikva
No, but if you save all of your receipts to show the taxes you've paid, your accountant might be able to deduct the taxes you've paid--but this requires "know how" and could open you up to an audit.

You may wont to check your state laws on individual taxes claims on such items. If you have a home buisness it may be used as a business expense .

countryguyhfc
No.

Maris
No that is not considered a deduction.

Leopardlady

stevexnelson
