On what day can you begin to file your taxes?

Dave
It doesnt matter what day, as long as you have all of your information and it is before april 15 (for an individual).

Your employer by law, has to have your w-2 to you by feb 1. Most other people with important information such as 1099's w-2g's and 1098 should have sent them to you by feb 1 as well.

STEVEN F
It depends on what you mean by 'begin'. I have already collected the numbers and started doing the math. In order to submit paper forms the the IRS, you must have your W-2, etc. Companies do not begin processing these until Jan. They have until the end of Jan to mail them out. Assuming you can gather all the required information by them, the IRS begins accepting e-filed returns on Jan 12, 2007.

i believe you can begin filing your taxes as soon as you receive your W2 forms after the first of the year

As soon as you have all of your w2's and other tax information.. Usually its mid to late January before you have all that together

The IRS will start accepting returns on Jan 12th 2007.

as soon as you get your w-2's

As soon as you have all your paperwork.
I get forms from my employer, bank, brokerage. I usually have the last of these by about February 6. Since I always have to mail in money, I procrastinate actually doing my taxes 'til April 10 or thereabouts.

January 1 or as soon as you get your documentation together, including your W2.

The first day to file electronically is January 12th this year. You could conceivably file a paper return on January 1st but, unless you run your own business, it is unlikely that you will have all the paperwork by then.
