Hi I'm a single mother and have worked for the past four years, it's been good and bad. Good for me as I get to spend time with other adults and stop my brain turning to mush, bad because my kids wanted to come home from school with me rather than having to go to some childminders house, I don't feel financially I have benefited as if your earning you are paying for childcare, rent, council tax, school lunches etc. I am still working but when I had to stop using my last childminder I couldn't bear to send my kids to yet another minder so was lucky enough to get my hours reduced to term time part time. The first day I picked my son (6) from school he shouted I love you in front of all the other parents, how good did I feel! One thing I will say is that if the government want more Mothers in work then why the hell is the school day so short? I used to go to school for at least 7 hours a day yet my son is only there for just over 5, meaning with travelling time I can only work 4 hours a day. This takes me under 16 hours per week pro rata so I no longer receive tax credits! Although maybe this is no bad thing! |

They stay in poverty until the kids come out of child care. You can get help with the childcare costs, but you still have to pay 30% yourself. Which still puts a big hole in your pocket if your on a minimum wage job,. Which a lot of single mums will be on because they can only work part time in shops, cleaning etc cos most jobs dont work around your kids |

Hi,
Government are trying to get single mums back to work yes.
But they do also help mothers..they are only asking for a
mother to do upto 16 hours a week. This would still help a
single mum with benefits as they pay half of the childcare
costs and in some cases all of it.

They can claim Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits, which can include extra money for childminders as long as they are registered. |
