When you started your job, did you give your employer form P45 from your previous employer? If not, did she ask you to sign P46 to say it was your only or main job? I am wondering if she has registered your employment with her with HMRC. How long have you worked there?
Unless you have other income, you are not getting your personal tax allowance of £5225. I would suggest downloading form P91 (history of employment) from www.hmrc/P91, and sending it to tax office, with a letter telling them about code employer is using, and asking staff to put you on a proper code number. Complete form back to 6th April prior to when you started with employer.
I wouldn't bother with phoning. It's all call centres now, and customer service not good.

Isn't this the same as your National Insurance number? I think that should be on your pay slips - or your employer will definitely have it.

Oh, I've just read the description above - it might be on your pay slip as "tax code".

Ollie
Hi,you will have to keep at the tax office.Your code should be on your wage slips.Good Luck

mainwoolly
I presume you mean your National Insurance Number?

The tax office gave it to you when you turned 16.

If you've lost/forgotten it you need to get in touch with the tax office.

However when you started work you will have had to give your NI No. to your employer. They must show it on your payslips and P60 etc.

If they're employing you without a Ni no. they're breaking the law.

Have you got a P45 form. That is where you will find it. Not to be confused with you tax code which changes every time you change your job.

I think you mean your code number. If you are on code BR and dont have another job, then you are paying way too much tax. You need to ask your employer for a form P46. You sign this to say its your only or main job and your employer should then put you on code 522L which is the basic personal allowance. The overpaid tax will then be refunded through your pay for this year. If your employer has a problem with this, ask them politely to ring the tax office (or their accountant) for confirmation.
As far as tax overpaid for the last tax year (to 5 April 2007) is concerned, you will need to send your P60 to your tax office and ask for a refund which they will pay you by checque.

I wonder if you mean your Tax Code, or maybe your National Insurance number (which is also used by the Tax Office as a tax reference number). Your employer will have both numbers, otherwise they couldn't employ you! Your Tax Office gives your employer a PAYE code, that represents the total of your allowances. The code is normally a number followed by a letter (but can be a letter followed by a number). The number is simply your total allowances, without the last figure. For example, if your total allowance is £5225, your code will be 522 followed by a letter. If you go straight to a job when you leave school or college, your new employer will give you a form P46 which you can sign. You will then be given a PAYE code by the Tax Office based on the personal allowance for people under 65. If it's your National Insurance number (also tax reference number) you would have been notified of this when you were 16. It would have arrived through the post - the number stamped onto a plastic card, similar to a credit card. You notify your employer of this number as soon as you start work or change jobs and you also need to quote it whenever you get in touch with the Tax Office. It's unusual not to have both these numbers on your Payslip, but you can find them on your P60 (the form given to you by your employer at the end of each tax year - it details your earnings and deductions over the year). Also, when you leave a job, your employer will give you a P45 which is passed to the new employer and also contains those numbers. EDIT: Your employer is obviously not acting appropriately, or in your best interests. If you're having no luck when trying to contact your Tax Office, then she should be liaising with them - 1 year at BR is just not acceptable, as this is usually only used if it's a second job. If your earnings are within your personal allowance, then everything you've paid should be refunded to you. (The problem is that this can often take time!). Make a sustained effort to speak to the Tax Office - better still, visit them to get it sorted and ensure that you have your NI number to hand before contact is made, as this is an all-important number. I've included the link below, as you may find it useful. Good luck, but do get this sorted asap - don't let it run on any longer.

It depends what you/they mean by PAYE number. If they mean "tax code", it'll definitely be on your pay slips, if not, your P60. It'll look something like this: 435L.

If they want your tax reference, this should be on your most recent P60. It'll be something like 123/AB012345

Your employer sucks. If they have been paying you without a PAYE number then they haven't been paying the tax man - and they will go to jail.

How it works is this: Employers have 2 options when they employ people - either the employee pays their own tax by submitting a return to the tax office OR (which is the law for certain size businesses) they pay the tax to the tax man on your behalf by the nice decuctions you see on your pay slip.

To pay the tax man direct (and if you see big deductions in your pay slip they are) they must apply to the tax office for a PAYE code for you. This identifies you as an individual.

A lot of people here are getting confused with NI and Tax codes - this is seperate from the PAYE number.

SO - they have got it - whoever pays your wages, if its a small company the pay clerk - if its a big firm then the pay centre - will have the number. THEY HAVE TO it's the law.

Your tax office will also have it BUT your employer has to know what it is.

PAYE (Pay-As-You-Earn) is an amount collected by employers when making salary or wage payments to employees on behalf of the taxation authority. The amount deducted paid to the tax authority is, in effect, a provisional payment of tax on the employee's income. The amount withheld is determined partly by the employee's expected tax allowances, exemptions and reliefs and partly by tax tables that determine the amount of tax to be deducted for the salary or wage paid to the employee. Individual countries may apply this principle differently in order to streamline the administration process - the tax code in the UK is an example of such a variation. In some countries, the PAYE system is also used to collect national insurance or medical insurance contributions.
