Jessica S | Parents claiming me AGAIN?? |
I am going to be twenty this year, and I have my own full time job, and pay all my own bills. I am barely a student, i take maybe one or two classes a semester. Now I had this problem with them last year. Do they HAVE to claim me? I just think its a bunch of bull. I pay ofr everything that I own, without any help and just becuase I still live under their roof I don't get to see MY HARD EARNED money! Its crap |

You pay all your own bills? Really? Do you pay your parents a fair market value rent? Do you pay your share of the heat and electricity and cable and Internet access and water used in the house? If not, then you don't "pay all your own bills". If your parents pay those things for you, they *are* supporting you, whether you want to admit it or not. Buying your own clothes does not make you independent.
In any event, if you were considered a full-time student for at least *five months* of this year, your parents are allowed to claim you as a dependent. If you did not take more than "one or two classes a semester" for the *entire* length of 2007, then your parents cannot claim you. |

If you live with your parents and they provide you with housing, utilities and food you should probably just say "thank you" and appreciate what they do for you.
To find out if they "should" claim you, you will have to figure out exactly what it costs you to live. Right down to the cost of things like toilet paper. You probably have no idea what it would cost you to be on your own. You will be claiming yourself soon enough. |

what my dad always used to say to me: 'if you don't want me claiming you, don't live here'... if they still feed you, or supply your room with electricity and heat, you are dependent on them. bummer ;-/ |

Make your parents a deal: You claim yourself but you back-pay them $500 a month in rent and utilities. That means that for 2007 you owe them $6,000.
Doesn't sound all that appealing now, does it? |

No,actually if you were at least 19 at the end of 2007 and were not a full time student for at least 5 months of 2007, and you made over $3400 for the year, the CAN'T claim you for 2007.
That aside, there's a real easy way to resolve this - move out on your own rather than living with them, and they won't even think that they can claim you. |

Because you're still living under their roof, you are a dependent and they can claim you. If you disagree with that. . . get your own place. There's nothing written that says a parent has to let you stay there after becoming an adult. Good Luck! |

talk to you your parents. if you are making more then 3,000 for the yr, and are not a full time student ( you said you take a few classes), then your parents shouldnt be claiming you on their taxes. if you are making so much, why are you still living at home? and as far as school goes, you know if you claim yourself, you might be eligible for scholorships, and grants b/c you are on your own. |

if you were really independent, you would get your own place. when you find the money to do that your parents will understand. but if you're living under their roof, you play by their rules. duh... |

File your taxes and include a note that you are paying your own expenses and your parents should not be claiming you.
They should allow you and disallow them.
Also when you do this be prepared to apartment hunt. |

depends on how much you made. If you make over 3,000 and are an employee of any business then your parents must report your income as part of theirs which may lead to a bigger tax liability for them. However they do get your exemption and your tax payments if they claim you. Also they get another 300.00 on the rebate coming back in the next few months by claiming you. |
