You'd need to claim off your home contents insurance I think. I doubt very much you could claim off the supplier. |

Couldn't have been much of a freezer if it all defrosted in 16 hours. They should know the first rule: During a power failure DO NOT OPEN a freezer. However, they should be able to claim on the household insurance - although they'll have to SHOW all this "ruined" food to an assessor... ! ! ! |

A freezer should keep stuff frozen for 16 hours if it is kept shut. It's hardly tropical weather here is it. |

used to work for the power supply company in Scotland ,and they used to compensate for defrosted frozen food if they could not get the supply back on again within a certain time limit, keep hold of defrozen food and contact your local supply company ,they will need to see the wasted food before paying out, also details when power went off and came back on again, good luck, you should be able to claim from them |

In the UK and anywhere else in the world, there is a simple solution... buy a generator and learn how to use it. We've been 4 days w/o electricity, and with a generator, you'd never know the difference. Invest and be prepared. |

I do hope they had sufficient Home and Contents insurance, other wise, they will have to fight with the electricity supplier in the small claims court... |

Their freezer should not have defrosted after 16 hours unless it was open. |

Yes they are entitled to compensation. See the site of the relevant supplier for details (or supply agreement).
It's based on the time power was off, not the loss, but consequential losses can be claimed, in certain circumstances. |
