damien.bone | Paying bills when made redundant? |
if you are made redundant and you dont manage to find another job before you leave, how do you pay all the bills? what about credit cards - do you just ignore them? |
|

well assuming you'll havesome sort of government help in between jobs, although your household bills are an absolute must, the rest, like creditors simply having to take a number and wait. what you owe them will never go away and payments have to be made, but no company has the power to askfor money from you that would be deemed unreasonable. i was in the same situation a few years ago.
if you get stuck, or even if you just want to sort out a budget for yourself before any trouble arises, have a look at the following link, it helps work out a reasonable expenditure for yourself and what you can afford to repay creditors. hint: this is the kind of thing they cannot reject. they'd have to have a court find a reason to disagree with your figures to get any more money out of you than what you offer after giving them a copy of this. |

never ignore bills, however, you may be able to take payment holidays from your card company until you find employment. You need to speak with your card provider and discuss their policy on such matters |

Heck no, you never ignore bills otherwise they'll take you to court and you'll end up paying a lot more than you bargained for, you're best off phoning them and explaining about your money/job situation and ask if they could reduce your payments until you get another job, credit card companies would rather get something off you than nothing at all. |

Never ignore bills cos they just get bigger and bigger. List everything you need to pay and work through them one by one.
Go to your bank and explain the situation and ask them what they can do to help. You may have taken out insurance against credit cards in such circumstances (sometimes they have a 90 day clause in them before they actually start paying for you).
The citizens advice office is also very useful and will help you with form filling etc.
Lastly go register at your local Jobcentre - afterall you are unemployed so you may or may not be entitled to benefits of some sort. |

Never, ever ignore credit card bills. That's the fastest way to get yourself in very serious debt.
If you have a credit card bill you can't pay, get a loan from the bank to pay it off instead. Loans involve paying less interest and fewer fees for non-payment. |

If you were made redundant, then surely you will have some sort of redundancy package which should keep you going for at least a couple of months while you look for a new job. Otherwise you should be entitled to unemployment benefit. |

Well thats why i take insurance on my credit cards so if i lose work they will pay my monthly fee for a couple of months. as for utility bills, they are required to take a payment plan, talk to the ombudsman they will explain it. I get telstra on my case all the time becuase of internet and phone, but i make a paykent plan with them. Credit cards for me is i pay want i want to pay and my monthly fee is $25,
talk to them, make enquiries, their not monsters, they need their customers. |

UK? No don't ignore them. Check your contracts to see if you have PPI. (payment protection insurance) You need to inform all of your creditors that your financial circumstances have changed. They may put a hold on the interest for a short while. If you are finding it very difficult to manage, then you need to get some assistance. Try CAB. Find your nearest one on the site below.
I need to correct andrea's answer.(sorry) CAB will NOT do an IVA (Individual voluntary arrangement) for you. You will be able to enter into a debt management plan with the CAB, but they will expect you to try to do the legwork yourself. CAB is also a charity run by volunteers. You will not be expected to pay anything. |

No...don't ignore them!
Speak to the Citizens Advice Bureau or a charity like CCCS and explain that your circumstances have changed. They will help you draw up a budget and work out what you can afford to pay. Once you have worked this out they will speak to the people you owe money to on your behalf explaining that you are no longer employed and offering an amount to be paid each month.
Usually the people you owe money to agree and freeze interest as it saves them the cost / hassle of having to chase and threaten you to make payments you can't afford. Once agreed, the CAB / CCCS will send of the monthly payment on your behalf (obviously you have to pay them though ;-) ) |

Re Andrea M's answer: the Citizens Advice Bureau is a free service, usually funded by local councils from Council Tax. It doesn't charge people. Check with your local bureau but I doubt any CAB will administer payments for you.
The best source of advice on the internet, bar none, for this sort of situation is National Debtline, link below.
Several people have said to you: don't wait until you miss payments, and check to see whether or not you have payment protection insurance. This is very good advice !
In addition to the National Debtline site, link below to find your local CAB, |

you can't ignore them, because they are going to pile on the interests. You have to find the money, or ask for a loan |
