Paying taxes...?
I am only 17 and s at the moment don't really pay many/any taxes, however, it just seems to me that taxes are going up and up. I heard on the radio that 3/4 of somebodys wage goes on tax and there is nothing anybody can do about it. I understand that emergeny services need funding.... but surely that doesnt cost 3/4 of somebodys wage?! Where is all this money being wasted?

We had some weird designer put some stone poles in the town centre... it cost 1,000,000 pounds (no joke). There just stone rods sticking out of the ground... money well spent ... no ... i would much rather pay less tx and not have these stupid things.

Thoughts?

Some of these posters haven't taken into account the hidden or indirect taxes, council tax, VAT, sales tax in excess of VAT (on things like car fuel, alcohol, etc), motoring offence fines, National Insurance Contributions, I could go on and on.
This Government is master of the game. How long before the electorate sees it? The problem is, there are so many on the various benefits who don't want the gravy train to stop.

I agree with your view of the modern art at least.

3/4 of salary does not go on taxes....there is a scale that starts on 1st 5k[ish] tax free, next few k is taxed at 10%, then the rest up to 30something k taxed at 22%......then 40% is the highest

then u got VAT, fuel duty, and a thousand other hidden taxes....but the only ones who pay 75% tax are those who earn little and spend what they do earn on cigarettes petrol and alcohol.....then maybe......just maybe....it could be u ;)

Psssst! wanna send a letter?

It's probably more than 3/4 when you take into account the fact that you are charged income tax, national insurance, VAT import tax, fuel tax, VAT on fuel tax, Stamp duty, Council tax, road tax, airport tax, insurance tax and god knows what else. In the UK you work to pay tax. If you look for justification the politicos point to the National Health Service but when you want treatment you will find you are too old, too young, too fat, too thin, to close, too far away, too sick, too well, too soon, too late to receive the third world incompetent lazy services supposedly on offer and even then the NHS will make you wait years to be told why you can't be treated. The NHS is the Governments excuse for robbing the British when in fact the money is all wasted in collecting it and then what's left is spent on salaries and pensions for the Government. If there happens to be a few shillings left after all those hogs have left the trough then they deal out government contracts to their rich pals who sponsor their election campaigns. Then once you get to the bottom of the purse and find it empty they cut services for looking after the elderly even further and use the cash to fund lunatic military adventures abroad to satisfy their own penis driven egomania. What a bargain!

The guy that says vote for the party that will reduce taxes has no conception of the reality. British elections are a complete farce. There is no such thing as two party democracy. British "Democracy" is a choice between two teams with identical agendas. Anyone who thinks there is any point in voting in the UK is just plain deluded.

Unfortunately, not only do you pay normal income tax on your wages, but there are tons of hidden taxes you fork out on a daily basis - vat, car, tv, booze, fuel - the list goes on. By the time you've completed a month, there's nothing left!

me and you today
Go to http://hmrc.gov.uk - all the info you need.

It all depends on what tax system you are on.
PAYE
Self employed
Limited company
Etc Etc
You dont have a say on what your tax will be spent on, you might think you do.

No one pays 75% tax, the majority of people in the UK earn £2,231 - £34,600 and pay the basic rate of 22% (after allowances). Even if you earn more the tax rate is only 40%

Ahhhh, I've just read Penfolds answer. If you take into consideration all the other taxes then maybe yes, we do pay an average of 75%. I was assuming you was refering to the tax on your wage.

lena20
It's incorrect that 3/4 of our wages go to taxes... tax is calculated on your wage, and I believe the highest percentage of tax someone can pay is 40% which is if you earn over £30,000.

ChocLover
It's not quite as much as three quarters, more like a quarter to half but it certainly feels like it! I agree that we pay way too much tax but that is because so many people dodge it. If everyone paid then we would all end up paying less.

At the next election vote (and get all your friends also) to vote for the party that will reduce taxation.
