I understand the need for taxes, however I do believe that I should be able to have a say in what my taxes go to fund. |

Are you talking sales tax or income tax? Living in Florida, we have no state income tax, so I'm pretty spoiled there. We don't have to file a State return, just a Federal one.
But, if we are talking sales taxes, property taxes, etc., I am ok with paying it. We need roads fixed, we need to pay our law enforcement offices, our fire departments, etc., etc. |

If you don't want to pay our taxes, go live somewhere that doesn't have the benefits of what our taxes pay for.
People shouldn't say that they don't want to pay taxes unless they are willing to forego the benefits of living in a civilized nation with a functioning government.
They should also not get their roads salted, their trash collected, their borders protected, etc.
they should not be able to use our freeways and their food should not be quality regulated by the FDA.
their children should not go to public schools and they should have no recourse to the courts when they are wronged.
the police should not protect them and the firefighters should stay awat when their houses catch fire.
if you know how to do these things cheaper, run for office, i'm all for it. but you can't just live in a society and refuse to participate in it. |

As taxes are the sole source of revenues for the various governments (federal, state, local) you will be paying taxes in one form or another that they use in order for the government to function. If they do away with income taxes, they will need to make up the money elsewhere....i.e. higher sales taxes, property taxes etc.
I suppose you could say to those people that feel there should be no taxes, how would they like to pay for services? Such as making sure the snow is plowed on the roads, making sure the roads are paved, police service, fire department, etc. Would they rather receive a bill each month from the police department for police protection? |

Well, if there's going to be a government, it has to get money from someplace, and taxes is that place. The state fills many functions, and those have to be paid for somehow. |

I have no problem paying some tax - this is a way to take care of those in need and support the good of the community and defend our nation. That said, I begin to get edgy when I see what my tax dollar is spent on. High paid politicians with big retirements. Some BS research or overpriced program. I pay income tax when I earn my money. I pay sales tax when I spend my money. I pay excise taxes on a whole array of things. I pay personal property tax on the things I own. I pay property tax on the home I own. I pay road tax every year on the car I license. And every one of these taxes is collected and distributed by a different group of people and I pay these same taxes year after year. Wouldn't it be better to collect one tax and take it from there? Those with lots of money spend lots of money. So if I am willing to live poor I could avoid paying sales tax. If you add it all up we ar probably paying around 50% of our income in tax of some sort even though it may be hidden - like in the cost of gas. |

While I think taxes are ok to a certain degree to keep our community going, It's when they go overboard that sours me on taxes. |

I dont think this is right thinking. In an organised society, everyone has an obligation to see that others also live a happy life, even if they earn less than ourselves. They are our fellow human beings. Put yourself in the position of the other party and then you will feel that someone should help you. Somebody also has to pay for the facilities we expect such as good roads, police, common lighting, availability of food, etc. and that somebody has to be ourselves, and the payment would be in the form of tax.
Taxes are one way of achieving the objective of social justice, but the question is: are the tax monies used the way they should be? If the Govt. or other tax collecting authority doesnt utilise my tax money properly, then I would be most unhappy. Who would like to pay more taxes? No one!
Do you have an alternative to tax? |
