First off do not panic.
Have the debt management people of the Revenue contacted you yet?
If they have contact them (the number on the letter, or goto the link below to find your nearest office). Ask them for a time to pay arrangement. If the debt is not cleared within 12 weeks then you will be asked to provide details of your Income & Expenditure. This will give your disposable income, and from that you make an offer of regular payments. The Revenue Officer will also take a judgement as to what is acceptable and if a mutually agreed figure is obtained all you then have to do is keep to the agreement and eventually the debt will go away.
It sounds simple, the process is simple, but do not be railroaded into an arrangement you feel you can not keep. You only get ONE chance with this if an arrangement fails you will not get another one. So be honest with your figures, and advise the fact the you are about to go on maternity leave.
Another avenue of approach is to get your husband to discuss this matter with his employer, usually if it is a decent employer they might also help out especially if they contributed to the problem.
I can assure you working for the Revenue as I do that you will get as much help in this matter as we are allowed to give. Be polite and truthfull, and this mountain will turn into a mole hill. |

tell the tax office that there is no way you can afford to pay £2000 in three months, its not your fault and tell them to spread the £2000 over the tax year deductions. |

Well the first few answers aren't even in English.
Please give much more info. as to how long this has been going on, why you think the code is wrong, and which tax years(s) are covered. |

tell them to spread it out in the next financial year and sort out your tax code. |

If there has been a failure on the part of the tax office to act on information made available to them by your husband or his employer, they may be prepared to give up the underpayment under Extra Statutory Concession A19. They will also consider this if there has been repeated error on their part and the underpayment has arisen over more than just one tax year. I suggest that you ask the tax office to look into this for your husband as there is nothing for him to lose . However, you should bear in mind that even if this criteria is fulfilled there is still an underlying condition that they have to be satisfied that it was reasonable for your husband to believe that his tax affairs were in order.
In the event that the tax office are not prepared to give up the underpayment, they will normally agree to collect the additional tax payable through the coding over a period of 12 months - more if this is likely to cause financial hardship. Again there is nothing to lose by aking for them to consider this. |

One step down is right - we need coherent step by step details of what has happened, what year(s) are involved, who did what, or who didnt do what.
No point in steaming in with complaints to MP's until we have the facts. |

write to Dawn Primarolo MP, she is Her Majesty's Paymaster General and is in charge! contact her via the direct.gov website.
technically he's responsible for his own tax but if he's in a union he should get them to take it with his employer on his behalf. if he's not in a union, he should join!
good luck
