Your boss misunderstood the law. MOST of the US population did as well. I don't know if someone at H&R Block said it was true, but if they did, they were wrong as well.

bostonianinmo
Your boss is wrong. Most likely he misunderstood the Block employee though it would not surprise me if the Block Head was wrong.

Your rebate is recalculated on your 2008 return and if you are eligible for more than you received in 2008, it will be added to your refund or subtracted from what you owe. If you are eligible for less, you get to keep the excess that you already received. Many folks misinterpret this to mean that you have to pay it back. You do NOT. The calculations guarantee that you get what you should AND are not double-dipping.

That is not true.

The stimulus payment does NOT affect your tax liability for 2008.

That'a NOT true! Somebody doesn't know the facts. Obama is the one that wants to yank the child tax credit from all of us working parents beginning next year though, so the Democrats will have more of our money to blow on $500 a piece lunches while we all eat Banquet $1.00 dinners.

It is not true. There is a rebate this year. If you did not get the full stimulus last year b/c your tax liability was less or you made too much, or your filing status or dependents are different since then, you may be entitled to additional money. When you file, there is a place for you to enter the amount you received and if you are entitled to the full credit now and were not last year, they will include the difference with your refund. That money is not taxable income and you do not have to pay it back.Go to the irs.gov website and you can read more about it. I efiled our taxes and it was simple to calculate.

No it is not true. And if you ever ask H & R Block for tax advice, make sure you are talking to one of their senior people. A lot of them are part time temps with sketchy training. Back in December they were flipping burgers and by May they will be welcoming you to Wal Mart but for a few weeks from January 1 to April 15 they are tax preparers! Never trust one of them without finding out how long they have been there. Better yet, insist on someone who is an Enrolled Agent, CPA, or tax attorney. Block has them and they are mostly the ones who know what they are doing
