chedder | Question about paying taxes? |
I had a question, we have been paying our self employment taxes for many years, someone said that we could skip a year and pay it the next year, is this true? Could we skip paying self-employment taxes this year? Additional Details Ok, the person that told us this has done it his self, that why I was asking to see if we could too.
I'll call the tax office and see what they say. |

You can do anything you want; however, you would be breaking the law. If you are SE then paying the SE taxes is something you want to do. That is what is going to entitle you to draw social security and other benefits when you retire. The question I would have for you is whether you have been making quarterly payments or not. If not then that is at least part of the problem and you are most likely already being hit for penalties and interest (whether or not you pay your balance in full by 4/15 or not). You do have some options: file your taxes and set up a payment plan (there is a fee and you will be charged interest on any upaid balance). Not so good a choices: file extensions that will get you through 10/15 and don't pay at least the tax due by 4/15 but you will be hit for underpayment penalties and interest or don't file at all until you are ready (I would not recommend this to anyone since if you don't file the statue of limitations never starts).
I know a guy who worked for cash for almost 45 years and never claimed any of it. Thought he was getting one over on everyone. He got to a point where he wanted to retire but had filed a tax return or paid his SE tax. This was almost 12 years ago. He now works to pay the unpaid income and SE tax related to the 45 years.
Good luck! |

No. There is no such rule.
There is one golden rule in taxes though: "Someone" is always wrong! |

Well sure - but you'll pay interest and penalties to the IRS for not paying it on time. |
