Something's fishy here. You do NOT pick up a Stimulus Plan rebate at a tax preparer's office. It will either be mailed to your home or sent to your bank account directly if that's how your refund was paid.
The ONLY 2 ways that I can see this happening is if:
1. The preparer used a partner bank for a RAL or fee stripping that the IRS was not aware of and the rebate was paid to that account.
2. Her refund was paid to the tax preparer's own account and the rebate followed. It's ILLEGAL for a tax preparer to have a client's refund sent to the tax preparer's bank account! A tax preparer who does this can be permanently barred from preparing tax returns in the future. If that's what her tax preparer did, she should find an honest one to handle her taxes in the future. There are still some low-life pond-scum tax preparers out there who practice this way. They usually rip off their customers and this is why the IRS banned the practice a number of years ago. |

Sounds like she fell for some kind of advance payment/ loan scam. Even if her rebate check was already out, which they aren't, the tax prep place wouldn't have had it, it would have come directly to her. You might want to check out what she signed with them. |

Maybe they started mailing them out early? Are you SURE it was her stimulus check and not her refund? I have to wonder why she had to pick up her check though..even though a tax service does the taxes, a check should have been mailed to her. |
