Question about taxes: Do I need last year's taxes to get mine done this year?
Last year I did them myself using that TurboTax software and I don't have any of the paperwork. Does the tax preparer absolutely need that to do my taxes this year, or can they do it without?

all you need to file is your 07 info

They can do without. Th software likes to have last year's, so that it's easier to go through the address SS# fields and so on. You need last years total income as the validation number, but you can always start over. As a note, it is recommended that you keep you tax records for at least 5-7 years in case of an audit.

It's not absolutely necessary, but you may miss out on a tax advantage if you had something to carry over from thye prior year.

They just need your income records for 2007

No the preparer doesn't HAVE to have it, but it's preferable. If you itemize then it is more necessary. And you should have a copy. You can probably still print out a copy, check out the site. It's always a good idea to check this year's return with the prior one.

The person that is going to prepare the tax forms usually wants them but Im sure they can do them without.

Yep. They need to be able to see what taxes you paid last year and any refund. If you go back through Turbo Tax, the information is already saved. You should be able to go back to Turbo Tax and print off your last years paperwork too.

No. You don't need your '06 returns to file for '07, but if you use Turbo Tax again, it will automatically transfer all your information from that year to this year and you just fill in the blanks and change anything that needs to be changed, but most of the info will be the same and make it a lot easier.

Depending on your situation if they will need it or not. If you did not itemize last year, have any capital tax losses to carry over, items depreciatied or a few reasons I can think of right off that would require them to need last year's return.

If you return was quite simpy then no they will not need it.

Having you 2006 return information is not required in order to prepare your 2007 tax return. It would probably be helpful to the person preparing your return that way they could examine what deductions you had last year to ensure that you get every possible deduction for the current year. It would probably be much more helpful if someone new is preparing your taxes. If you have any capital gains/losses transactions your preparer will need to know the date acquired and sold as well as amount originally paid and amount received. If you are using a broker they can usually provide that information for you. Additionally if you itemized your deductions in the prior year any state refunds will be taxable so the preparer will need to know that information. If you are filing a partnership or corporate return you will more than likely need your 2006 information in order to fill out the balance sheet and M-1 shadeless on the return. I will assume that you are referring to an individual return. Hope this helps.
