Jeff | Question regarding Taxes and Tax ID for online selling.? |
Hi there,
I am 17 years old and on my way to starting an online website selling car parts.
The website I am trying to get affiliated with is asking for a Tax ID.
Questions:
Am I able to get a Tax ID, or should I just use my SSN#?
Also, being 17(still a minor) how would I file for taxes being an affiliate?
Sorry if these questions are to shallow, but at the moment this is all that runs through my mind.
If this helps I live in Louisiana, USA.
Please only give answers which you are certain about and refrain from spam.
All helpful answers will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. Additional Details If the site doesn't ask for a DOB, then could I just fill in my SSN and use the website or must I be 18?
I am trying to find some way to kick off my online entrepreneur ship and I have found an affiliate which supplies the products I need.
I just need to know if I can just sign up with my SSN and be safe(not liable get in to much trouble if things go south) |

A SSN can act as a Tax ID. Unfortunately, as a minor you can't sign a business contract which is what this would require.
You can wait until you are 18 to open the business/account. Or have your parents start the business now and "purchase" it from them when you turn 18.
There are multiple ways to pay taxes and pros/cons of each - sole proprietorship, S-corp, and LLC would the most common that someone in your position would use. |

For tax ID you can use your SSN.
Even minor must file tax return if income exceeds the filing requirment. It may be treated as self employed income. You must file tax return if the income is $400 or more. |

they probably want an EIN which you get from IRS but you really don't need it unless you are paying employees which is unlikely
if they will not accept your SS#, then it is a simple thing to request an EIN from IRS
actually until you turn 18 they probably cannot legally work with you since you are not eligible to enter into any legal contract |

1. An SSN is a type of tax ID. The other two types of tax ID's are for businesses and foreigners. An SSN is the only type for individual human citizens of the U.S.
2. You would file for taxes in exactly the same way as if you were 18. There is absolutely no difference.
3. This site could be a scam run by identity theives who are just trying to get your SSN so that they can steal, and are not really selling anything. Make sure it is legit before you give them your SSN. |
