Apparently the only way with regard to a property is for the parent to give (sign over deeds) to the child or beneficiary at least seven years before death.
Also comes in handy to do this if parent(s) require full time nursing care as the Government can force the sale of the house to pay for the care. |

Yes. Look up trusts on the HMRC website.
These are all to do with moving monies from a potential estate without having a full tax liability upon the monies moved.
It does not necessarily have to be outside the 7 year rule (where gifts made within 7 years of death are clawed back into the estate for IHT purposes).
Talk to a solicitor and ask about discretionary will trusts to nil rate band (currently £300,000) and look at the budget and the changes occurring from 6 April 2008.
A small point. If the estate is worth less than the nil rate band limit (currently £300,00) upon death, no IHT is due anyway
PS aaroncbcb - good point BUT a gift with reservation is not a gift which is exempt from an estate - read IHT206 from hmrc.gov.uk |

If you've already inherited then no! Unless it's millions in which case the government would gladly accept bribes! If it's your inheritance that you want to protect for your children then I'd suggest to either move abroad, spend it or cash it out before you die and keep it somewhere secret. This country will take as much money as possible through taxes so the only real way to avoid it is to not live here! |

I've heard the way to get around it is to sign it over to the heir before death, so it's not technically an inheritance.
Edit: I'm American, so I'm not sure if it works the same over there. |

There are ways of reducing the amount you will have to pay. You should seek professional advice, it will cost you but you will save some and the tax man will get less. |

yes you get the money before the person dies or you get a share of estate etc while they are alive to lower their value there for their assets after death are to low to be eligeble for inheritance tax.. i am sure that is what i would do for my children one day as i will make sure MY money does not go to the government ill much rather see my children have it or any other relative or maybe even a close friend |
