i am sure you have tried tax credits, i agree with you on not getting credit cards, i hate the things. I am in a similar postion, or will be...Stop worrying...set up another account and put the money that is 'left over' in to this. Are you actually still employed while on mat leave? So you should get an allowance from them. Join the yahoo group- frugal genius...start learning to live on nothing, if you don't already, make sure you get the benefits you are entitled to. If you are on a higher rate of tax credits you should be able to get the mat grant which is £500. You can also do a benefit calculation on line. Google benefit calculator. Good luck sweetie, try not to worry to much, you don't need this so near to the birth of baby. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER, THINGS ALWAYS WORK OUT IN THE END. XX

You wrote "we are struggling to pay our council tax and the benefits say we earn too much for help".

But that was when you did not have sickness, your finances have changed so make a fresh appeal to the council, for the relief as special hardship case.

See a lawyer, legal aid type.

Well there is no point in anyone telling you that you shouldn't have had kids if you can't afford them (as I'm sure someone will) as it's happened, so nothing can change that.

I'm pleased you don't want to solve your problems by getting credit cards or loans - that is just a downward spiral when you are on a low income.

If the benefit system won't help you, then you have to help yourself. I know it's a worry (I've been there myself) but don't cry about it - that won't help and will just make everything worse.

The only option left to you is to economise. You both need to sit down and work out what your income is and what your outgoings are. You then need to adjust your outgoings to match your income (or look at getting a higher income by changing job, working overtime, or working in a second job). It's no good saying that it's impossible - you have to do it. Do you have to have a car? Do you have take-aways, go to the pub, or have holidays? All or some of these things may have to go.

I'm sorry there is no magic or easy solution but, trust me, once you've got it all worked out, you'll feel so much better. I wish you the best of luck.

Take it one day at a time and don't stress over it...not good for the baby. Just maybe it's time that your husband get a better paying job

You need to increase your income or reduce your expenses..Simple soultion, but may seem hard to expidite. Be creative, How about a part time job from home.. Prehaps you could sell a few things on eBay.. If you have a hobbie can you turn it into a business.. Speak to the people you owe council tax to.. prehaps they will allow you to stretch out what you owe them over time.. Or find ways to lower your costs of living.. Try not to loose too much sleep.. We can't always find the money to get what we want but, most of the time in the end we find what we need ..

Are you claiming Working and Child Tax Credits? You should be.

If not, call the HMRC Tax Credits Helpline on 0845 300 3900 (8am - 8pm).

You should already be claiming Child Benefit.

You may also be eligible for Council Tax relief. Speak to the council.

He could get a second job. But the way to not worry about finances is not to make more money but spend less money. Get a cheaper car, buy discounted food and clothes. Cut out extra expenses and it should get easier. Besides saving money though, try and do something weekly low-budget and fun to take your mind off of it for a little while. Go to a park, museum, cheap movie theater, rent a movie, etc. Good Luck!!

That is so bad that the benifits are saying you earn too much even though you are both on low incomes I would get that checked out maybe a citizens advice beaureau would be able to help you, maybe your not claiming all the benefits you are entitled too, ie working tax credits, child tax credits. the car gives you independence but is it a neccessity you could sell it.Your lucky you dont have loans and credit card payments to pay if you do go down that road you could be in for more worry and stress.I would also go and see somebody at the council if your going on maternity leave you might get reduced council tax as your wages will be lower you have nothing to lose good luck

Nexus6
You should get child benefit - you can get that even if you're on 5 grand a week.

You may have to look at your expenses and see what you can cut out until you are in a better financial position.

A car is very expensive to run for example - can you do without it?

As some have said, re-apply for the benefits. See if your husband can get any overtime. Contact the council about the council tax - they may be able to sort something out.

It is people in genuine need of help that don't get it. I know someone who had so much hassle recently, just getting what he was entitled to after an accident. It is a pathetic system. If I were you, I would go down to your DSS ofice, or make an appointment or whatever you have to do, and I would say, I want to tell you my circumstances, and I want you to tell me exactly what I am entitled to. If they can't, tell them you are staying there until someone does. It makes me so mad when people are in trouble and they can't get help. Other people with less to worry about or too lazy seem to get the lot. You go for it girl. And if you can't get any joy, tell them you are going to see your MP. I wish you good luck in every way.

make sure you've got a written plan of what you have coming in and what's going out.

Don't go down the loan/credit card route or in a few months time you'll be in an even worse state.

Look at things you're spending money on and decide if you really need them - do you really need a car for instance?

If you have any debts, speak to the companies and ask them if you can spread out the payments a little further.

get to the Citizens Advice and ask them to double check what you are entitled to benefits/tax credit wise.

The main thing is learn from this and do something about it. 20 years ago I nearly had my house repossesed and at one point literally had no food in the house - I mean nothing - the cupboards were completely bare - no tea or coffee, nothing!
I had a new born son then and it made me think about priorites. I went to university (twice) and now live in a £750k house, six figure slary, with a couple of nice cars and exotic hols every year, but I still remember what it was like to have nothing!

Things can only get better - just make sure you don't do anything to make them get worse!!!!

Well, said Alberto
Speak to the council; they will be happy to come to some arrangement. Its going to be a tricky couple of years but you'll come through it.

Good luck.

A pack of condoms would have been cheaper. Why do people have kids then complain they can't afford them?

Well outside of your husband looking for a better job there really isn't much you both can do. Not getting credit cards is a very good thing cause sounds like you cannot afford them anyway. People get in way over there heads with credit cards. Adding children to a low income family only puts more responsibility on you both so I wouldn't add any more children to the family for a while.
