The rebate will not effect your 2008 federal tax liability or refund. The law says the IRS can't recover any extra rebate payment by reducing your 2008 refund or adding to your 2008 tax bill.

The "rebate" is an advance credit against your 2008 tax return (which will be filed in 2009). However, it is calculated based on the amounts shown on your 2007 return. When you file your 2008 return, the IRS will recalculate your "rebate" based on the 2008 amounts. If this results in a larger "rebate", you will receive a check for the difference. If this results in a smaller rebate, you will not have to repay the difference.

The "rebate" will not increase or decrease any tax refund to which you are entitled. It is an additional refund.

Is that so??? Post the link where you found this information. I will be very interested to see where it came from. Because this is the Info from the IRS website and the info that we are supposed to go on.

Q. Is my stimulus payment taxable?

A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment.

Q. If my stimulus payment is not going to affect my 2008 tax refund or increase the tax I owe next year, why is it I need to retain the letter that lists how much I received?

A. In the event you do not qualify for the full amount on your 2007 return but you do on your 2008 return, you will need to have the letter as a record of the amount you previously received. [New 4/11/08]

Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

Q. I don’t qualify for a stimulus payment based on my 2007 return. But my tax situation will be different in 2008. Will I qualify for any special benefit?

A. Possibly. The 2008 tax instructions will include a worksheet to help those who did not qualify for a payment or those who received a reduced amount determine if they can obtain a benefit when they file their 2008 tax returns next year.

No, we will not have to pay it back.. There was some sort of bill that was passed to make it so that we would not have to pay it back.

Trouble
NO, you WILL NOT!

THAT was the first 'outcry' from the People in the Beginning and that was 'quickly' put to rest.
The Federal Gov't said you 'will not' be expected to claim them on 2009 Taxes AND as it stands, so far, the Gov't is waiting to see 'some' results.
House Leader Pelosi said it wasn't enough and bush agreed. Yet, he still wants to 'wait' a few more months to see re: a Second Stimulus Check!
Maybe it's his 'Parting Gift' to Americans....lol...lol....

Read the IRS website and don't believe all the crap on the media sites.

princessbethanie02
no u don't have to pay it back. it's what we would've gotten with our income tax refund if they passed the law back then.

You understand wrong. You will NOT pay them back (unless you received yours fraudulently that is.)

Read up on it on the IRS website.

Now, don't you feel a bit silly?

Judy1
Uh, you're wrong on that.

spend now pay later, not getting one so doesn't matter. Pay off debt if you get one.
