Religion and taxes question...?
Why aren't "religions" made to show where the money they take in is going? All those TV evangelists are multimillionaires. I would like to see the laws changed so they are forced to account for the money they take in and to be taxed on it. I really don't see why they should get away with it. Why do they? Please don't give the old "separation of church and state" number as that really doesn't say anything.

Actually they are a business, but they aren't called a business. I think it's wrong that they don't have to pay taxes, but they enjoy the income.

Amen!

Actually, if a tax-exempt organization has income from something not directly connected to their charitable purpose, they are required to pay tax on it as a business.

Because the money coming in are basically donations. A non profit organization. Non profit organizations are not taxed, because they are not considered a business. Also donating is tax deductible, on your income taxes.

Not that I agree with any of it, as far as churches are concerned.

It's not separation of church and state, actually it is because they fall under nonprofit laws. If you want to see the law changed, start writing letters to your congressmen and senators. Though, I doubt they will try and touch that topic.

In the days when it was made into tax exempt it was done because religion was considered good for the people.

Come to my church and you can look at comprehensive financial statements. We are not in a "for profit" business and spend contributions on running the facility and doing good works so over the long haul there is no income to tax.

I believe it's Senator Grassley who is currently pulling in 5 or 6 of the big-name, incredibly-rich-lifestyle pastors and demanding that they open their books and show that all of those fancy houses, cars, etc., are being properly reported as income to them, and that they are paying the proper taxes. Folks are screaming "separation of church and state" but he's not questioning what they're paid - he's questioning whether they're paying their *income taxes* on what they're paid.

If in the process a few of their members realize just how huge a profit is being made - not for god but for the pastor to live a rich lifestyle - that's the fault of the pastors for not having been above-board in the first place. (For instance, if the church pays for a $20,000 toilet in your private bathroom in your private home, guess what - that's income, and you have to pay your taxes on it, whether you are Martha Stewart or Rod Parsley of World Harvest Church.)
