Right i know this sounds daft, but when u get ure petrol and its £1.07.9, where does this .9 come from?
I know i`m old fashioned but why don`t they just charge u £1.08 pence, doesn`t that make more sense,i mean,u dont get £0.001 pence change,r they robbin us of this point 1 of a penny,i know its daft but where does it go....any one...cheers

107.9p sounds less than 108.0p, although it is really only 0.1p cheaper (not very much at all), so basically, they're trying to make it sound cheaper than it really is

For the same reason, you don't very often see things in the supermarket at £1 or £2 - they make it 99p or £1.99 so it looks cheaper

It's not taxation; it is simply a gimmick to make the price look smaller than it actually is. In the US, when the price was 25.9 cents a gallon (believe it or not, it was, once), it made a slight difference. Now, with the price typically $3.759 per gallon, it is really quite silly -- but the habit persists, and probably will continue to do so.

My uncle was telling me about a friend of his who worked in a bank, and he asked his boss (the bank manager) if he could keep the points of the penny's, and after five years he'd already made a million out of them.
Imagine everyone paying this point of a penny (because if its in litres, then it will catch up with you) everyone paying this will make someone out there a very wealthy man.

I believe it is all to do with the taxation. Its taxed at a certain % rate so we get the 0p.9

Its from when they work out the tax. The forecourt manager has to take the price of the fuel, then add the tax to it. This is why it ends up with odd amounts

have you never watched the film with Richard Bryers,Brewsters Millions, basically he worked in a tax office or bank, cant remember which, but he stumbled on the fact that there was loads and loads of .001cents floating around in computer space, and all he did was collect billions of them together and he was pure minted, gave him lots of aggro but it was a very funny film!

just a ploy to make it look cheaper. If it was based on the tax calculation , surely it would sometimes be .4 or .7
