Gin & Tonic | Rip off Britain? |
In Spain we buy petrol in Euros what you pay in pounds in the UK. We can eat (both in and out) for a hell of a lot less than we can the UK. Vat in the UK is 17.5% - in Spain it is 16%. To tax a car in Spain is £35, the UK costs several times that. Fresh water, despite seasonal shortages costs us 30% of what we pay in the UK. Gordon Brown has introduced so many new taxes, stealth and overt, well over 100 during his time as Chancellor. If the Spanish government introduce an unpopular tax, the populace refuse to pay. Tobacco and booze are a fraction of UK prices, and we still smoke in restaurants and pubs here, and non smokers do not complain.
No wonder expats here in Spain unanimously refer to the UK as rip off Britain. I split my time between living in Spain and the UK, not just for the weather - I'm just hacked off being screwed by the dictators running the UK, and even more hacked off with the British accepting everything thrown at them with just a shrug and an "Oh well" |

my mum moved to catral, spain, 12 months ago, they moved to get away from the uk full time, they reckon its the best thing they have ever done, they live in a spanish village, liveing the spanish life, not trying to live a british life in a foriegn country and wish they did it years ago, good luck to anyone who takes the chance and trys it, believe me, i wont be far behind |

Spain is a net recipient from the EU, Britain is a net contributor, so we are subsidising your lifestyle.
They havn.t caught the Health and Safety bug like we have either, or Political Correctness, so they do not spend millions translating everything into fifty different languages and all the rest of the nonsense in the name of Multiculturalism.
They also do not have a Prime Minister who thinks it is his job to run around the world giving money away. |

You are spot on.
But how else would our PM be able to finance his wars, his expense accounts, his corrupt government, his financial gifts to other countries, his membership of the EU, his handouts to polygamous married partners in other countries............. |

Regarding the complaing about smoking, people will complain about anything they are told to complain about. There are ways of doing that that I'm not going to go into. It doesn't matter who's in government, they all rip us off; there is an agenda. There appears to be a threshold of acceptable living standards on this planet. In Span it's better in some ways, In England it's better in others. I just spent 2 weeks in Peru, and I believe that the Hispanic culture is far ahead of the British culture, primarily because they all get on with each other. The cost of living is much less over here, I gave the maid a weeks wage as a tip for instance. However, there are many areas where you appear not to look; the cost of health care is very expensive in other countries. England has an education system that is the envy of most of the world. Driving on many foreign roads is very dangerous, the road quality is poor and they drive like maniacs, completely disregarding the few rules that do exist. Many people are left unable to work due to illness or injury, in England those people are looked after and allowed to continue contributing to society, as consumers, which benefits everybody in the long run, by the provision of social benefits; which, of course, the government uses endlessly to drive a wedge between groups in society. If you had an accident in Spain, and had to pay for your health care, you'd be glad of a free health service. You cannot have everything. |
