Road Tax in the uk?
My car tax runs out today but i cant afford to get a new one for a couple of weeks.

I wont be driving the car and it will be sat on my drive.

How long do i get before i automatically get a fine through the post?

Joe N
Technically it should be straight away, but I for one have let it ride for a week and been OK - looks like they give a bit of leeway. But why risk it? You can declare your car off the road (SORN) in about thirty seconds at the link below, then you just buy a new tax disc when you're ready.

tomorrow, Call the DVLA up in the morning and declair your car off road, you will have to fill a form out stating that it is off road, and you wont have a fine

it happened to me the once

and calling up saved me the money just

paul h
sorry to hear you in this position, iam not exaclty sure of the timescale. but if it will be a while send off/apply for SORN/ look at the dvla website for info.

you can have a vehicle sorn, but it will have to be off the public road/highway.

driveway ect will be fine.

all the best

You should be OK for a couple of weeks - think they only start chasing it up after about 3 weeks. But, still get it done a.s.a.p. - you can still get done even if it's on your drive.

Fill in the form on the bottom of the application ASAP I mean like yesterday and you won't get one

What you need to do is get it SORN for the two weeks, then when you can afford to tax it again you fill in a form at the post office and they will charge you from them. You can file SORN if the car is off of a public highway(ie on a driveway or in a garage) and it is definitely not being used when it is declared as off the road.
It won't take long for the DVLA to catch up with you and when they do they will also charge you for the two weeks you didn't use your car for! SORN is definitely the way to go!

Ring dvla and inform them it sorn, otherwise it`s liable to be crushed.

ringo711
It used to be 14 days, but I would check it out with the DVLA, it dosen't matter where the car is parked if it should be taxed then they will fine you,

Stacey
Go on line and fill out a SORN form. Its to declare its off the road and not being used. Do it straight away and it is valid straight away. You can then re tax your car when your ready

willowGSD
Unless you can be sure that it will be within 14 days, Why risk it? Just go and get a SORN. Read your reminder letter! It should tell you, or go on line and do it!

Since July 2005, fines are automatically sent out 2 weeks into the month of renewal.

I suggest that you declare the vehicle as off road (SORN) Statutory Off Road Notification.

You can do this on-line. Then, once you are able to get a new licence, you can.

If you decide not to tax straight away, you would still have to back-date to the expiry date of previous excise licence.

The link will give you all the advice you need.

Park the car facing the house so no nosey people can see that it's out of date. The fact it is on your drive exempts you from needing to declare SORN as your drive is not a public road. Tax it when you are ready.

Crazy Ma
I left my car a couple of weeks recently and didnt hear anything, I renewed it online on the 14th of the month and got the tax disk thru within a couple of days, nothing was said or anything, I had just forgotten for a bit then didnt have the money for the next week.

I was involved in a RTA during the 14 days of no tax but nothing was said, I backdated the tax to the start of the month once I bought it so paid up in the end, just a little bit later.

It was all ok for me :)
