SOmeone is claiming my kids on their taxes?
I did not work this year so I do not have to file taxes and my kids soc sec cards and birth certs had been stolen almost 3 years ago and last year i had my friend at h&r block run my kids numbers and they all came back claimed for earned income i had her do it again this year and it happened again. I don't know what to do since I cant file taxes to get their numbers red flagged. These people are claiming my kids and getting money for them and i don't know what to do.

Your Uncle Dodge!
Try reporting this info to the police for starters.

CURiOUS .
Omg. Call your local social security department and report a fraud alert. Check your kids credit reports because whoever did this may have used their names for other things if their bold enough to mess with the IRS. File a police report. And follow any precautions on this website.

I hope everything works out for you. God bless your children.

Contact the IRS

The hard way is by contacting the IRS. The paper work is enough to choke a horse. The easy way (but takes time) is to file a tax return when you earn money and claim your children as dependants. The IRS will catch this via their SS numbers. Both you and the culprit will be questioned. You'll show proof that they are your dependants and you pay their living expenses. The culprit will be fined and possibly prosecuted.

This happened to me also. My daughter's ss card was stolen and when tax time came around, I filed my taxes. Only to find out that my return was rejected due to someone claiming my daughter on their tax return. I called the IRS and they sent me some forms to sign stating that I was her Mother and that I supported all year. It took alwhile but I got my whole refund. The other person was ineligible to collect the EIC for my daughter and has pay back the money that they recieved.

"my friend at h&r block run my kids numbers "

And exactly how did your friend do this? The only "test" is to attach the children as dependents to a tax return and submit it to the IRS and see if the tax return goes through.

According to you, you didn't work, so this couldn't be your tax return. And to attach them to anyone else's tax return would be fraud.

Call the IRS and file a complaint. There is enough information given on the tax form to track them down. FYI: even though you didn't work, you can still file a "zero return", which basically is a statement that tells them you didn't work. Your friend at H&R should have known this.

Best option is to have their Social Security Numbers changed. It's only a few pieces of paper, or you can do it online. It's a type of identity theft. It's best to stop it now before they start using their numbers for other things, like collecting state benefits, obtaining credit, etc.
