businesses can register for VAT if they want there is no limit if they do it voluntarily except that they mus register if they foresee sales of over 64k

tax and accounting for tax is different .. clearly this is where this is heading if he understates his takings / profits he will pay less tax !! this is why us honest people pay so much methinks to subsidise people like him.

mischievous
Why do you have to be PC and not say salesman? Businesses only have to register for VAT if their annual takings are above a certain value (which I can't remember)

casper
traders only have to be registered for vat if their business makes above a certain amount( unable to be accurate as to what this is)

Vat threshold is £64000.00 a year - if the shops annual takings are below this he would not be registered for VAT

he must be registered to trade, no matter what he says. The inland will love to hear from you. What he is doing is called bouncing has books, hence the 9.99 and charging you 50.

Good luck to him, if they find out he can be jailed.

Phill
if i was you i would speek to the inland revenue because he is cooking his books and keeping all the profits without registering it with the tax man, inland revenue love people like him

Perfectly legal in terms of VAT as he is the final consumer who has paid VAT. You have not been charged for VAT in this instance as he is not registered for VAT. What being registered means that they are able to charge their CUSTOMERS for VAT that they have been charged (Reclaiming VAT from HMRC) meaning the customer is the one that actually pays the VAT and not the seller.

They are also able to reclaim VAT from the HMRC for items they use in their business not sold to consumers e.g. Cash Registers.

It is actually quite lucrative for them to be registered for VAT.

The only time where it becomes illegal is if the business makes money above the threshold for mandatory registration.

Get off your soapbox because he is the one who is paying for VAT and not you. He may make the money up some other way or making up for it in profits but none of your money is going to the government.

In terms of ringing up the amount on the cash register, he could be cooking the books or there could be a more logical explanation. I have to ask if the receipt stated £50.00 (that is what would have been recorded on his books) then why are you complaining? He then would've done nothing wrong.
