Sales tax on a new car - determined by where I bought the car or where I live?
In my state, sales tax on new cars varies by county. I bought a new car in a county with 7% sales tax but I live in a county with 5.5% sales tax. Is my sales tax rate determined by where I bought the car or by where I live? I'll be registering it in the county I live in.

The sales tax on the purchase of your car is determined by where the car was bought, so it would be 7% in your case.

viajero_intergalactico
yeah, its by where you live.

that is why when you buy on the internet, they will ask where you live so they know how much to tax you. and if they dont ask, or even tax you, then you are required to report your purchase to your state so you can pay the tax on your own.

A car is determined (at least here in PA) by where you buy it The dealerships in Pittsburgh (here) are hot since 1.5% of a 40K car is $600 bucks. Many dealership sales have suffered. since the same cars can be purchased just a few miles away for that much less.

Most states are "where you buy it" not where the title is. You can call your local rep or even the car dealer for more info for your state.

Where you live. I am in Pennsylvania, which has a 6% tax.
We border on Delaware, which has no tax. However,. if you live in PA, will register it in PA, you pay the pA tax.
The Delaware dealers are erquipped to register your car for you, and, unfortunately, to charge you the pA saes tax and remit it to PA.

by where you live in most states. I love your Boston pictures we have them also.

jas
it goes by where u live

colley411
It depends on where you are trying to register it. so if you will be registering it in a place with 5.5% tax, that's what you will pay.

Molly W
I am pretty sure it is where you bought the car, since I know people who have bought a car and drove to another state to purchase it for that reason.

Depends on the laws in your state. In Kansas we have destination based taxing - depends on where the goods are delivered as to what tax is charged. You should call your state department of revenue and ask them how it works in your state.

It's determined by where you live, not where you bought the car.
