Your friend is right if he lives in NYC and is married and both spouses earn $200,000 or more. New Yorkers pay Federal, State and city tax and our tax rate is effectively 50% because of the way the alternative minimum tax works.
Puzzles me when Hussein talks about raising taxes to 50% for the rich, as a lot of rich people live in NYC, does that mean no increase for them? |

No.
A single person with $200k in income and no deductions would pay about $50k in income taxes plus about $9k in social security and medicare. Even if you include state taxes, you will get nowhere near $100k in taxes. Plus, I would expect someone with $200k in income to have some deductions which would lower their taxes even more.
Remember, friends are only wrong about taxes about 99% of the time. |

Generally, no. However, it they spend all the money on cars (paying sales tax), live in New York City (paying state, city, and federal income tax), made the money by taking a premature IRA withdrawal (subject to a 10% penalty, in addition to the regular income tax), they could easily be paying more than $100,000 in total tax. |

Very likely they are when you add social security tax, medicare tax, federal and state income tax, sales tax, ad valorem (property taxes) and every other tax you pay whether you realize it or not. Also you pay drivers license fees, auto registration fees, gasoline taxes and if you are a member of a licensed profession, you pay a license to practice your profession. |

by golly no way. Income tax is about 26%. It will take a big chunk out of your pocket but not by half. Im not sure my statistic is true after the new propositions have been added. However, it should change dramatically |

Not in the USA. The maximum income tax rate is 35% and it doesn't kick in for a single person until they have taxable income of over $350,000 |
