i got a call today from the social security administration. they told me because i pay my taxes i was picked by the federal government to get $500 deposited into my bank account for 6 months. i didnt give them any of my info and told them i would call them back in a couple of days. cuz this sounds too good to be true. they told me that i dont have to pay back one penny. i got their number and called it to see if it was really the social security admn.... and it was... do you think this is a scam? have you ever heard of such a thing? |

This family was asked to give out the bank account information of their child. The child was 11, had no account and the real social security people know that. The real social security people already have all the info the scammers are looking for.
The scammers will get you to say your info first and then tell you that your are correct.

Scam. Look in your phone book for the phone number of your local Social Security Administration's office and check again. So what, when originally you got a number from a person that called you about your recent fortune. It looks like a set-up. |

It's a total scam! Anyone can pick up the phone and say "Social Security."
If they call you back, ask for them to verify your name, address and SSN. Have them give it to YOU -- don't give them anything.
If you did give them your personal and banking details your bank account would be drained first thing Monday morning and they would use your personal information to steal your identity and make a mess out of your life. |

Call your local TV show that does consumer reports, they will put out on the air that people are trying to pull this scam and you just may save many people from making a big mistake!

Scam. SSA isn't going to come knocking down your door to give you money. It's usually the other way around. You have to go beating down their door to get what's owed to you when you reach the so-called "retirement age". |

I agree with the above answers. I would also recommend that you contact your local police department, as they might put out some kind of community news alert.
You can be sure the con men are contacting others with this scheme, and some may fall for it. |

It's a scam. You called the number to see if it was the SSA and it was? Because you looked up the number in the phone book and the number was correct, or because that's how they answered the phone? Think about it - if I call you and claim to be God, give you my phone number and then answer my phone "God speaking" does that make me God? I don't think so! |

I've not heard of it...
Make sure that you contact the SSA independently of any information the people who contacted you give you--ie get the SSA number out of the phone book, call them and ask. Also ask exactly why you're getting this money. |
