Me | Second job...why do people get taxxed so heavily for it? |
Surely we pay enough tax on our primary job! Politicians need to revise this law or at least outline an explanation as to why they tax so heavily! |

You get taxed on your earnings as a whole, your primary job includes a portion that is tax free but you can't double claim it from a second job so you get taxed at the normal basic rate of 20%.
If you don't earn too much with the second job then you'll also save on NI because you have to earn a certain amount before that gets kicked in whether it's your first or second job, so lots of little jobs will lower NI.
There's lots of explanations out there if you understand the terribly complicated tax legislation. Go to www.hmrc.gov.uk and find some info out. |

In the long run, if you do 2 jobs that pay you £10,000 each, you will pay EXACTLY THE SAME amount of tax as if you do one job paying £20,000, or four different part-time jobs paying £5,000 each, etc.
Everybody gets taxed at the same rates, with the same annual tax-free and (for now) 10% tax brackets, irrespective of how many different employers they've got.
In the short term you might get taxed at a higher rate because your two-jobs status has put you on the wrong tax code, but the means that after the tax year's finished you'll get a tax rebate, ie. you'll get all your overpaid tax money back. |

That is daft - are you saying if I got one job for about 5 hours a week I should be taxed heavily on this (incidentally I;d be earning so little I'd probably not be taxed at all) and if I got another 8 5hr a week jobs I shouldn'ty pay tax on them? I could be earning £50k and paying no tax. In fact most PAYE tax depts would come up with schemes for employers to pay their employees as if they had several different jobs and soon no one would hardly be paying any income tax and would grind to a halt. On the plus side there'd be no money for tax credits or other benefots or immigrants so maybe they'd all start working too!
Seriously like many have said you are taxed on your earnings as a whole, it;s the only way the system can work and be fair. And your personal allowance (ie: the amount you are allowed to earn tax free every year - currently £5,435) is allocated to your first/primary job so it appears you pay less tax in this job. You will end up paying the same tax whether it is one job or two - this is just a practical way of taxing it fairly. Make it any more complicated for the government and you'll end up being accidentally taxed more. |

Its because of the way the tax system is set up. Your allowances are the tax free part of your earnings which is maybe the first £5000.00 you earn. Anything you earn over that is taxed at a certain percentage rate depending on your tax band.
I think it is a fair system and feel that the rich should pay more tax than the poor.
How do you sugest the government pay for hospitals , the police, schools etc if not from income tax then what form of tax v.a.t. or inheritance tax ? or something else ! |

The more you earn, the more tax you pay. That is taxing the better-off. Most peoples' free allowance is used up in their main job. A second job, will, therefore, be taxed more. If the low-earners need a better deal, it should be through a higher free allowance, and/or the 10% tax band. |

The UK taxation system is based on the total amount of income, whether earned or investment. Whether fair or not, it is not based on the effort put in, or hours worked.
If you disagree with it so strongly, the only solution is at the ballot box at the next general election, if you can find a political party who agrees with you. |

Maybe it's somethign to do with Doley-Scroungers (DS) saying that they can't get jobs because the hard workers have two, which is absolute twaddle, the jobs are there because the DS just wantto sit in their butts all day smoking dope and sharing knife attack stories while watching Jeremy Kyle!
Anyway, someone has to pay taxes to cover their dole money!!! |
|

Please punctuate properly folks.
|
Exactly! I did it years ago, and all I got was a slap on the nose for trying to earn a little more, whilst politicians claim their greedy snouts off - do you know a grasping Tory MP has claimed over 29,000 last year for the cost of buying a home in London, despite living well under an hour from Westminster? |

They tax heavily to prevent you getting a second job.
I agree with you in that is a tax that only really effects the poor...if it wasnt there then more people could work as it would be worth them going out and getting a second job rather than only doing one part time job.
I think it was brought in to stop people that do two very high paid jobs getting away with not reaching the higher tax rate. ie split their real job into 2 and say that they earn £30k from each to avoid the tax.
I think the 'second job tax' is at the same rate - you just don't get the tax free sum at the beginning. |

I agree totally. I have a part time job in tesco and pay 20% tax on my earnings there so i have to work at least 25 hours a week to get a decent pay packet thats on top of the 40 full time hours in my main job |
