Self employed, can you pay spouse an income?
If your self employed in the UK can you pay your spouse a weekly income even if they are not doing any work for the company. ie staying home to raise kids etc.

Yes course you can, she doesnt have to work in the business, its common practice in the UK and legal, just make sure that you pay her the minimum i.e the yearly allowance of £5225 this will go up in April from the start of the new tax year

Short answer : Don't be stupid, you already know the answer is no.
Long answer : How do you intend justifying to the tax office paying someone for doing nothing, as you have said in your own question.
Realistic answer : Many self employed people can justify paying some money to a stay-at-home spouse in respect of real work done such as doing the invoicing & other bookwork, typing up quotes and answering the phone in respect of sales queries etc.
Consult a qualified professional, such as you accountant in matters such as this.

Edit note: to answer De Deuces's question, the answer is called "income splitting" and has the benefit of gaining an extra personal allowance and both (now slightly lower) incomes starting at the lowest tax band.

If she keeps your records or something of that nature why not. If our politicians can do it ?
Just give her a job description. Dont pay her too much otherwise she will have to pay tax, and It could get very complicated. But I personally I would get advice. Phone the Inland Revenue. Believe it or not they can be helpful.

off course you CAN MPs do it and even claim the money from the government for the privilege.
as someone stated put her down as a cleaner and pay accordingly it does not matter if she does not do the work only you will know almost all businesses do it and certainly at least 76% of MPs do it

De Deuce
I guess you could but WHY? All income is taxed so you would not be gainning any advantage THAT way.

This type of ploy could be used to pay OTHER family members to greater advantage, like a son in law or other type by marriage. This way you could write off the salary as an expense but STILL they would have to pay the income tax on it and you would be burdened with the expense and NO labor help to back it up.

jackson
no make her work !

hi there
yes but it would need a job description and obviously you would pay tax etc. and you would not say she wasn't working for company. employ as cleaner for example

Have your spouse do some work that justifies a salary.

Good question.

She can be paid up to the lower level, about 89 pounds a week without paying tax or NIC if that's her only income. She is supposed to do some work though, i.e. book-keeping or cleaning workshop. You should be able to think of something eh!
